Do you have a civilian ATC frequency in your area of 129.55 mhz?

sometimes I get what sounds like civilian aircraft on a uhf freq but it turns out to be a plane very close to my house calling Daytona Beach approach or 1 of the other local atc frequencies. Each time I hear it, it turns out to be the 2nd harmonic of a civilian atc frequency.

I believe the 259 Mhz is where you will hear pirated broadcast comms. Guys hacking into and using military satellites. Language is usually Spanish.

Why do you say not likely?

DAMA is a controlled access and encrypted. If there is Spanish in the clear on one of those frequencies it is probably LOS. I'm sure there is plenty of surplus gear in the hands of unauthorized users.

Since he is located in Puerto Rico it could be anyone's guess. Lots of questionable activity nearby. Realize it isn't just the military that uses the UHF aero band. Any government agency could be the user and sound civilian in nature. Also a second harmonic of 129.55 isn't out of the question if close enough.

I guess I assumed that Spiritwolfpr was talking about radio pirates in the UHF band, sorry if that is not the case,
But anyways I have heard them talk on the 250 MHZ area although I don't remember the exact frequency they used and they were speaking Spanish. Here is a link to an article that sounds like what I must have heard. and disgust them on RR but maybe not.

Well that is certainly interesting. I've never experienced open relay transponders like that in the UHF mil band. It must be something that isn't used for ordinary milsat comms. Certainly outside of anything I ever used. I have heard Spanish stations in the UHF mil band before, but they were not coming from above.

That's a neat article. Thanks for sharing. I must try and see if I can find out more about that activity. I would have imagined truckers hijacking Amateur Radio satellites but not milsat. I've never heard it myself, but I haven't really been on amsat much. I'll have to ask a friend if he's ever heard it.

I don't know where you are but for most of us in the US area the transponders are saturated with pirated activity. It is non stop.

All the US military UHF satellites have simple bent pipe transponders with some being wide and linear capable of passing AM/SSB and multiple carriers but most are narrow and designed for a single FM or digital carrier. The radios are almost always encrypted and used in DAMA mode through the sats.

The radios are capabile of encrypted (red) or un encrypted (black) use and in some cases the voice and-or data unit encyption might be external. However, a good number of the Mil Sat birds are simple "repeaters" and do not have bulk encyption built into same in many cases.

If you have a good RHCP Antenna you easily tune up the 255-265 Mhz (FM) and often hear the guys down south chatting - it's not Spanish BTW most of the time. You can alos pick off the birds with other antenna's with amos as well...
