It's for my Yaesu FTM-400XDR. When setting the freq using the F/MW key, I can enter each digit (xxx.xxx), but can't enter the 0.5 Khz digit (xxx.xxxN; N = no, can't set). Also, for the 1 Khz digit, I can enter any value, but then it changes to 0 or 5. E.g., set to 155.272, but it changes to 155.270 .

I thought I'd be clever & set the Step to 12.5, then set the freq to 155.260 . My plan was to then turn the Dial 1 click to get 155.260 + 12.5 = 155.2725 . I was able to set the Step to 12.5 & the freq to 155.260, but when I rotated the Dial 1 click, it changed to 155.26875. When I rotated back 1 click, it went to 155.25625 .

So the display shows down to 0.25 Khz, but how do you set it?

P.S., I know it's not a ham band, but I will be listening only. It's for an emergency group I work with. When I'm deployed, I'll get one of their radios. But I'd like to listen in when approaching the event.

The manual says it does 6.25 KHz steps. Have you tried that? From 155.260, 2 clicks at 6.25 should get you there. If of course, you can even get to .260 while in 6.25 step mode.

Good idea, but no go. Set steps to 6.25, then freq to 155.260 . One click up gives me 155.26250 (up by 2.5KHz) . Why isn't it 155.26625? Then 1 click down gives me 155.25625 (down by 6.25 KHz) . Can't even get back to the freq I entered. It seems it has to get on some boundary, then it will go the steps I want. Can anyone explain this?

It’s a limitation of the radio design. It’s an amateur radio. It was not designed to do 7.5KHz steps.

If you need a splinter channel, you will need a LMR radio capable of it.

As this is a ham radio, and that's not a ham frequency, transmitting here is not a concern. You should be good enough to hear 155.27. If this is NBFM, the audio might be way down, and if it gets weak, you might not hear much, but as long as the signal is a reasonable strength, you should be good to go. Mike

I don't own one of those yet (I will eventually) at any rate I have several radios that from the keyboard you can't enter it , but when programming from a full software package, if you give it an oddball frequency it will do it ,so it's like a $50 investment for software and cable that will program all the setting and memories as well as store preprammed APRS messages and such , you may get lucky and be able to program what you need ( i have more than one radio , that works like that) only you can decide if that's an investment worth trying , i will say if you ever sell the radio having boxes and manuals and accessories commands a higher price ? So it's not a bad idea to have , i have a couple of old one of a kind HTs that i purchased ever accessory the made for it , many are things I will never use and remain sealed but when i die and my collection gets sold of people are going to be thrilled that every widget is included so they don't have to turn the country over and shake in hopes that the widget they needs falls out .again only you can decide is it worth it ?
