About a year ago, there was much spirited discussion about the problem with the silkscreen lettering on the 396 faceplate rubbing off with routine wear.

Uniden offered to refurbish or replace the faceplate as a warranty repair.

My questions:

Are units that have been refurbished holding up?

Whats the turnaround time these days to send a radio to Uniden for refurb?

Are newly purchased units immune?

My radio is about 13 months old, and the lettering is mostly long ago disappeared. I really don't find it a big enough inconvenience to send the radio off for refurb.

Mine has held up great. It has been almost a year since the refurb.

It took about 14 days I think to get my scanner back (round trip).

Don't know about new units for sure, but I have programmed approximately 10 of these for other people and they have reported no problems.

Being that your radio is 13 months old your warrenty is up and Uniden may not
fix your radio for free. I have two 396t's and both of them had to get new faceplates. No silk-screen issues with my radios anymore. If you are thinking about getting yours fixed you might want to give Uniden a call first.
