Still learning more about the 396 after being with the pro96 for so long. For those of you familiar with central Va frequencies, then this probably will be easier to understand.

Virginia State Police (apco-25) uses two towers in my area. I believe that they both broadcast the same exact thing, just they are spread out to cover a wider area. On the pro 96 I can put the control freq for each tower in one bank, and the scanner will choose the one with the best signal. On the 396, can I have both control towers in one system like the pro 96, or do i need to create 2 systems- one for each tower, and put the same talkgroups in both, and set both systems to the same group key (treating each tower as a different system)?

I'm also unsure about the Chesterfield/Henrico/Richmond system too (Mot type 2). Chesterfield and Richmond seem to use mainly just one control tower, however, Henrico talkgroups appear on two different towers (the henrico and the richmond towers). Can I just put the 2 towers in the same system, or do i need to create 2 systems with the same talkgroups?

what mainly prompts me to ask this question is when scanning either one of these systems above, the 396 displays one of the control channels on the screen along with "lnk" or "dat." Sometimes it seems to switch to the other control channel, but sometimes not. I'm just not sure.

Thanks for your help guys...I'm doin everything I can to try and see what works best for the Virginia Stars system that all of our radios seem to have issues with.

You should put the towers in seperate systems and turn them on or off as needed. You could put them in the same system using the groups for both towers, but the 396 will lock onto the first control channel it hears. It would switch control channels if one of the signals becomes weak enough to lose the lock on the control channel. You can not place a frequency in between control channels as you can with the PRO-96.
