396xt - dead display

The display on my 396xt is dead. Has color, but no data is displayed. Anyone have any luck restoring the display via a non-Uniden repair service without replacing the entire display module? Uniden no longer has the display module and will not repair the unit. Thanks.

try resetting the ribbon connector or try to adjust the contrast and see if that helps.

Uniden may not have the part for sale, but the 396XT is still listed as accepted for repairs:

When I contacted Uniden repair via telephone, I was advised that the 396xt was no longer being accepted for repair.

Then they need to update their website. Either that, or whoever you spoke to did not give the correct answer. Several models older than the 396XT are also showing as accepted for repair. including the 780XLT, which was introduced back in 2000.

I had a similar situation occur with ICOM America repair. That is, their website was not reflective of the current repair offerings.

I would suggest that you send a message to Joe Bearcat. If the website is incorrect, it needs to be fixed. If the person you spoke to is wrong, then he or she needs to be informed os the correct responses.

If all else fails sell it for parts and use the proceeds to help fund a newer model. You never know who could use a keypad or belt clip. Otherwise it may still work fine remotely via Proscan...

I was getting ready to send in my 396xt, glad I saw this thread, I’m going to call them and ask for to clarify why it says on the website it’s being accepted. Ok so I just spoke with Uniden and they said that anything that shows on the on the Website is still being accepted, however the parts availability such as the display is in question so that may have led to some confusion. According to the site and the person I spoke with if it can’t be brought up to Spec. They will offer a discounted unit mostly likely another 396xt if they have one.

Thanks for the update. Perhaps the information I got was related to my description of the problem at hand (no display). The woman I spoke to did mention something about the availability of parts. I’d be curious to learn if you’re offered a discount off of list price or off of a price below list price.
