To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

5th post about the 5000, probably getting tired of me now ;). Alright, I'm trying to set up my 5K for 700mhz operation but it gives me an error which I assume means the frequency is invalid. I've read around and I've seen someone say I have to hex edit the CPS and another saying to change the "Tx Opt Transmit Dev" to 2.5 but when I get to the zone assignments to change this setting, It's greyed out. Any help would be appreciated,.

For reference I'm trying to program 773.94375 as a control channel

The settings in Zone / Channel Assignment have nothing to do with what you are attempting, fyi.

Kevin has it right.

That's probably my issue here. I don't believe I do have one entered for 700mhz. How would one go about setting that up?

You're looking for Trunking / Trunking System / Astro 25 Channel ID. There are a couple ways to get the information you need.

1. Run an SDR trunking program that displays the band plan -- Osmocom OP25 comes to mind, as does Unitrunker.

2. Scour the RR threads related to the system you're monitoring. Often someone will have posted the band plan -- usually when pasting a log file during the time when the system was coming online.

3. Try what I can only describe as the "Motorola default" band plan. I think if you search my posting history, you'll find a screenshot.

4. Read a system radio or get your hands on a system codeplug.

It is important to know that you cannot just guess at this information (aside from #3 above). If the band plan is not correct, it will not work. The radio may attempt to affiliate as well.

My biggest problem was getting ALL the base frequencies right. I found you need all of the ones defined by a system.
Next, you need to define ALL the control (and alternates) for each site.
>> Follow all the guides for NAS scanning 'AND' program the rotary switch for TX inhibit or your radio WILL try to affiliate with the system.
Look up the system/site you want to program here on RR. Make note of ALL of the control channels and alternates.
Those need to be defined in CPS
I gleaned ALL of the base frequencies using DSD+ (my case, 2 for 700 Mhz, 1 for 800 Mhz, and 1 for 160 Mhz.)
Those also have to be defined in CPS. While you are at it, you might list all of the UN encrypted talk groups for each site.
Those determine your channels you will hear.
This is all a big learning curve, took me 6 months to get a working codeplug.

Thanks, I’m working on getting the base frequencies but I should be set after that. Hadn’t heard about the rotary switch until now so I appreciate it.

Playing with my radio just now, discovered a couple new talk groups gone encrypted, suppose I should remove those from my scan list.
Doesn't mean anything but will hang on a no voice channel robbing a potential voice call.

Alright, I’ve finally figured out the bandplan and in theory it should work. I’m having an issue with the zone assignments though. For the “receive frequency” i assume id put the control frequency? or would I leave it as the default or what would I put in? If i put in the base frequency as the receive frequency it won’t let me change the channel spacing from 25 to 12.5. Let me know if y’all need me to attach screenshots.

In Zone Channel Assignment...

If you are specifying a conventional personality for the purpose of no affiliate scan, put whatever dead frequency you want. Usually 851.01250 is good enough.

If you are specifying a trunking personality the Receive Frequency field won't be available.

You're in the Zone/Channel Assignment page trying to enter the trunking control channel frequency?

And for the spacing you have to go 2 boxes to the left to change the spacing under Tx Opt Tansmit Dev
