73 SHF DISP ENC....I monitored during lunch time that Shelbyville Dispatch was using ENC communications....Now after lunch it's not. So apparently they have the ability to Encrypt their communications when they want and then switch it back off.

It was definitely 73 SHF DISP which is on RR database. I put the scanner on hold and watched ENC come up several times.

well...let's hope that is not a sign of things to come.....let me guess "Homeland Security" will be the excuse.

nope, that 1% of criminals who use scanners while in commision of a crime. Makes me think that the Sheriff has been spending too much time with the Columbus IN police chief who has been so adamant about encryption being a must for not only his department but ALL law enforcement, even security guards.

Crazy. There should most definitely be encrypted talkgroups for sensitive operations, such as the way IMPD does things with their investigations talkgroups, etc. But encrypting every single bit of day-to-day traffic is just excessive.

I agree, it is crazy. Unfortunately at some point soon Columbus will be going full time encryption.
