I've had my BTC15X for about 5 months now. I listen to primarily trunked public service on 800Mhz. I was never satisfied with the stock antenna. I don't want to put up an outdoor antenna for various reasons so I tried a mobile antenna in my second story office on a pizza tray. My first try was a Bingfu that was not much better that the stock back of set antenna. I have to assume the thin coax was the primary issue.

Today I received a Larson tri band NMO antenna. What a night and day difference. This thing is awesome. My primary issue was static. No more static! I'm a happy camper now. I did a lot of research on RR regarding antennas and appreciate all of the good info.

Anytime you use a mobile antenna for a base installation, you are only doing a compromise. A magnetic-base mobile attached to a metal ground plane is about the best you can do under the circumstances. Since you can't put up a standard and conventional base antenna, you'll get what you get with this compromise. When dealing with a trunked radio system, you need a solid signal from the control channel, and if it's less than that, any reception will be sporadic at best.

Good luck with the mobile antennas. Maybe one of them will bring you satisfactory results.

I use the Larson tri-band with a permanent nmo mount on my car for decades. I use the new one now that has the spring and the heavy duty mount. Even works great on two meters ham band.

So here's an option. Get a cheap floor lamp at Walmart and mount a ground plane, small discone or yagi on a broom handle and mount it to the floor lamp. No more than 20 ft of rg8 or 6... you can move it around, twist it, whatever you need to do. ;)
