My 996T has just developed a serious error. When I turn it on, it comes up with the "clearing all memory" message, and stays there.

Nothing I have tried has any effect.

Anyone have any ideas??

The first step in looking at an issue like this is to try a new SD card. Make sure the card is formatted as a FAT32 card. If you have a Windows PC with an SD card slot, you can format it there.

Turn the scanner off, remove the original SD card, insert the new SD card. Follow the steps in the manual or quick start guide, as if it's a brand new scanner. See what happens.

Ummm… that scanner does not use SD cards. The link Doc posted above will have correct suggestions.

Can't do ANYTHING, as the memory clearing message never goes away, thus the radio won't connect with any programming software. Was working fine minutes before this happened, now useless. $90 if I want to get it repaired by Uniden. Older Uniden radios had a 'reset' pin that would wipe everything, but not now, on this or newer, that I can find.

AND it's powering up just fine. Never seen this error before, was hoping someone else might have, and found a fix, simple OR hard, but just a fix.

The reset is done through the keyboard.....

Follow these steps to reset the scanner's memory:
  1. Turn off the scanner.
  2. Simultaneously press and hold down these 3 keys.... 2, 9, and the HOLD key.
  3. While continuing to hold down these 3 keys, turn on the scanner.
What happened when you tried the reset sequence? What did it do when it powered up with those 3 keys held down?

If it still boots up with the "clearing all memory" error after the reset is correctly done, probably time to send to Uniden (or replace it with the updated BCD996P2).

Still locked on the clearing screen, have tried multiple times to rest it, no luck. Don't currently have the funds to send it to Uniden. have other radios I can use, that one is just a bit nicer.

It sounds like a memory error. The repair is the only real solution - that or sell it as-is and put the funds toward another one.

Have you tried reloading the firmware using the BC_VUP firmware updater?

The firmware updater is too large to attach. BC_VUP_v2.0.0.3.zip Install the updater on your computer before working with the scanner. Here is the latest firmware for the BCD996T. You will need to extract both the updater and the scn firmware file.

Bad keypad?
Liquid in the keypad? Stuck key(s)?

Open it up and disconnect the ribbon cable from the keypad and power it on. If it powers up without the message, it's a keypad issue.

Nothing can communicate with it, it is locked up on 'clearing memory'..

It was on a shelf above my desk, nothing spilled on it, and way more effort to try that than I want to expend at this point.
I DID try cleaning the front of the keyboard, no change. All keys seem to be fine.

Take a look at the circuit board and check for corrosion. Clean with alcohol if required. Corrosion can create leakage paths which can cause all kinds of strange problems.
