Does anyone know the band split of the GPS Receiver antenna?

Think he's asking what frequencies the GPS system operate on. Maybe to build his own GPS antenna.

The GPS accessory is not just an antenna. It is a complete GPS receiver. There are such things as GPS antennas, but connecting one to the scanner won't get you GPS, as the scanner wants the NMEA data being output from the GPS receiver.

According to the Wikipedia, GPS receivers use two frequencies:

L1 = 1575.42 Mhz (or 1.57542 Ghz)

L2 = 1227.60 Mhz (or 1.2276 Ghz)

As long as you have an antenna which is made to pick up those two frequencies, you should be able to use it providing that your GPS has an external antenna jack which most older units had and which most or all newer units do not have. My old GPS 60CS has what I think is called a "CX" connector for the optional external antenna and my really old GPS V has a detachable antenna which uses a BNC connector.

I'm everywhere Focker!
I was wondering if I could use a different antenna other than the one that is made for the gps.

What exactly do you plan on connecting this antenna to? The 996XT requires a GPS receiver, not just an antenna, as pointed out by Paul.

I am sorry to hijack this thread...

I just bought a GPS module (Parallax PMB 648) which claims to give NMEA0183 v2.2 output. I connected the RS232 data wires and ground to a DB9 connector (with guidance from this web sites wiki) and the voltage and ground leads to a 5v power supply. The module lights up as it should but when connected to my BCT15x scanner, the display shows No GPS Input. I have set the baud rates etc but no luck. I didn't pay much for the GPS module ($20) and can use it for other projects.

I am wondering if it doesn't work due to it using the NMEA v2.2 protocol and not the NMEA protocol called for in the wiki?

Anyone have any idea what I may be doing wrong? I am leaning to just buying the suggested Garmin GPS kit but I dont see what that kit does any different to what my GPS module does right now.

Just a guess - but does it need a null modem?

Can you connect to the PC and see it output data using terminal?

Can't remember exactly how you do this - but should be an ez google find. I've used it in the dark ages to verify a GPS output.

I don't see why it won't work so long as you have Tx of GPS to Rx of scanner. Should be no real reason to hook up anything else other than GND.

The "No GPS Input" message on the scanner will be displayed when it is getting no data from the GPS (ie: Rx on scanner hooked to Rx on GPS) or BAUD rate does not match. If it is getting any type of recognizable data from the GPS it will display "Searching for Satellites".

Is this the unit: GPS Module PMB-648 | learn.parallax.com

I see it says it will output TTL or RS-232. It may default to TTL which will be too low signal voltage for the scanner. You may have to hook the GPS up to a computer and tell it to output RS-232 levels.

Finally!!!!

It was the `null modem' thing. So for $20 at Radio Shack for the GPS module, and a couple of dollars for the batteries, I finally have a working GPS receiver for my scanner.

I butchered the supplied serial cable, as I don't need it, to connect to the back of the scanner.

The GPS module is the one that davidmc36 listed. It outputs both TTL and RS-232. I am using the RS232.

Nice to hear you got it working. Simple fix when the Rx and Tx are swapped. Looks much like the GPS module that I installed inside my 996.

I want to thank everyone for their help and suggestions. Its now working well and I am just playing with Freescan to add some coordinates to my sites.

To everyone who needs a good cheap GPS antenna and have the means to attach it to a 9 pin serial connector, then head down to your local Radio Shack and see if they have any of these on sale. its better than paying $120 for a store bought item.
