I am looking for some help on restoring an old 1940's zenith radio... Does anyone know of any websites that can help me find loom schematics for the tuning dial?

Well, Thats a new one I have not seen... Sort of the "Hemming Motor News" of classic radios...

What I am looking for is another radio phile like me who has or is into restoration of classic radios. I seem to be able to find all of the sites that will fix my radio, Buy my radio or sell me parts... What I am after is someone to help or share there experience on what they went thru and right now my experience is pretty bleak!

But, hey thanks for the link... I'll look it over more closer when get back from work this evening...

BTW, Good to see your still around John

Those who do restoring would probably have a personal page with their experiences, have you tried a google search using Zenith radio restoring/rebuilding?

I really like it and would recommend it to anyone, one thing I have seen alot of is posts of diehard icom or kenwood hams who once they use the 857 have alot of compliments about it and often get one themselves.

My dad was a radio & TV repairman back in the vacuum tube days. He still has a lot of old equipment and manuals, I can take a look when I'm up there in a week or so if you would like. He was a Zenith man too.

I have restored a few older radios. Does it work now? If not, replace all caps. Every one of them.

REMEMBER - the chassis on a lot of older radios is HOT!

I can't help with the cosmetic restoration, I just like to make them work.

The zenith is an 8H832. I think its post war production because this does FM / AM and CD (Civil Defence) It list like this:
AM Std/BC 55 KHz to 160 KHz
FM 100 88 MHz - 108 MHz
FM 45 42 MHz - 50 MHz

I need to find some history on the 1940's / 1950's band plan. I never knew they did commercial brodcast in that portion of the 6mtr band.

Other then that, It works great! It has a nice sound to it. Takes a while to warm up but I cant complain. I TAKE A WHILE TO WARM UP!

I tried to post a pic and since the web sites changed quite a bit since I've last been on I cant cut and paste.... I'll figure it out later on. I got to resize the pic.

Oh I see; Well, I guess I would owe you a finders fee if I found the schematic to get this dial to work.... But that has not happen yet...

The Best site I found with a schematic of my radio is this:
http://www.nostalgiaair.org/

But the schematic has nothing on the Dial loom.... But I asked in there forum and I have a few looking for it as well...

By the way... The radio is a 1948 Zenith 8H832... an updated version of the "Gargoyle" Zenith 8H032 - With the OLD 7mtr FM Band on the Dial. That portion of the band was then disbanded in 1945 for Television.... (If I read the post corectly)

I'm not sure as to why they continued to install that 7 mtr band on the radio. Their, seem to be some scuttle butt talk about a group who was fighting to keep the band plan going but lost the battle!
