A chirp / baofeng question

If this is verboten, sorry. I glanced at the rules.

I am trying to program a UV-5R for a friend. I have experience programming radios, but not with chirp or the BF series in general.

I tried building a .csv file for jamming into chirp.

Chirp responded by not accepting the file, but now will not let me create a new file, nor will it read anything but .img files now.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled chirp to no avail. I have written a bug report on Dan's page, but no response.

Any ideas?

Did you download the factory image from the radio first and use that as a basis for your new file?

That is pretty much mandatory.

Well...
I made a safety copy of the existing codeplug.
But
I uninstalled chirp, and reinstalled it. It won't let me click 'new', nor will it let me open a stock template.

In order for Chirp to be able to read a .csv file it has to be in a certain format with certain fields in the correct order and they don't contain all the fields that a Baofeng radio uses. Chirp .csv files are not very useful.

You have to download the image from the radio, then copy and paste the channels from another radio image or stock config into the image of the radio you want to program, then configure the other settings, then upload it.

I would suggest learing how to use Chirp by reading

The only reason to use CSV files in CHIRP is to import channel settings into an image file you've downloaded from the radio. CSV files contain channel settings, but do not contain any radio settings, like VOX level or squelch level.

You will have to read the radio first. Otherwise you can not upload to the radio. I have never had luck with copy / paste in chirp and just hand programmed in new channels.
