I have a 396t digital scanner. Used freescan and imported settings from radio reference. I understand that AACoPd went encrypted (not a fan), but I can’t understand why I can’t get AACoFD on the same scanner. I know they’re not encrypted because I can listen to them thru a scanner app on my phone. Could use some help/insight

Do you mean the Anne Arundel County?

And this system?

If so, that system is P25 Phase II. The 396T cannot receive Phase II talkgroups, only P25 Phase I.

The Anne Arundel County system is P25 Phase 2. The BCD396T is capable of P25 Phase 1 only. You will also need a scanner which can handle simulcast. Your only alternatives for a handheld are the Uniden SDS100 and SDS150 scanners and the Unication G4 and G5 pagers.

The Unication G4 and G5 pagers are commercial receivers used by many fire departments. They can scan only one system and one site at a time. They will handle the AA County system nicely. They can scan up to 64 talkgroups. The G4 is 700/800 MHz only. The G5 is VHF and 700/800 or UHF and 700/800 depending upon the model. If you are interested in the AA trunked system only, the G4 will work. If you want to monitor several systems at the same time, that will require a scanner. You could use the pager for AA County and the BCD396T for everything else. You can set up different systems on different knob positions on the pagers, but you can monitor only one system at a time.
