To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So, I’d like to have my Motorola Visar set up so it’s on all the time at home. It’s already on a battery eliminator hooked up to this power converter so I can plug it in at home. Only issue is - not sure what model to get. This one is only good for 2 Amps or 12 volts. I order it and when I hit the PTT I get a loud humming noise over the air so I’d assume this one isn’t strong enough to handle 4 watts of transmit power of the Visar.

There’s another model that puts out 12 Volts and 5 amps should I order that one instead ? Don’t feel like burning the house down or blowing up the Visar with this smaller one.

On a side note - I took the battery eliminator ( and the Visar ) and hooked it up to my car and it was fine. No humming noise whatsoever. So my guess is this converter at home doesn’t have enough power to transmit with.

2 amps should be plenty to run the radio.
I think the issue you are having is a poorly filtered power supply. Sounds like the buzzing is 60 cycle crap from the power supply.

Finding a suitable one may be a challenge. Normally I'd recommend a larger power supply designed for communications use, but that's going to be more expensive than what you have now.

The radio shouldn't draw more than an 1 to 1 1/2 amps on transmit so it should be OK with what you have. If however if it is of poor design then yes you may be pushing its limit to regulate properly.

Also consider that your RF energy on transmit may be induced back into the power supply causing it to go unstable. It is what to expect with a POC from the PRC. Ditch it and get another with 2 amp or better capabilities. Good luck.

Thanks guys

I’m gonna go with this one and see how it does.

It can handle a much bigger load ( that’s what she said ) and hopefully will cause the static to go away as well.

The battery eliminator works great hooked up to the car so it’s not that. I shall report back here with my findings. Thanks again !

Followup to this post - purchased the 5AMP / 60watt model above and bingo ! Hum went away ! Seems like the smaller 2AMP wall plug wasn’t enough juice.
