Going to visit for the Air Show at Hill AFB and was wondering which
tower(s) to use for the Salt Lake City area? Any other area tips will be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Have most of those loaded. Can't take my digital in which leaves out some mil-air.
I have most of those others pre-loaded for all shows.

It's a silly requirement from Security Forces hoping they can prevent eavesdropping on their particular P25 talk group. It's silly in 2 ways. 1) Seriously, the SF guys doing the screening at the entry portals aren't gonna know the difference between a digital scanner and an FRS radio. 2) If SF really wanted to prevent eavesdropping, they can encrypt their TG. Pretty easy task with P25.

It has been a couple of months since I last "monitored" the HAFB system, and the Security channels are encrypted, so back to silly way 1).

At the last airshow at Langley AFB in Virginia.....they had prohibited ALL scanners and also mentioned the "confiscation" word.....so my want to check and make sure they meant ANY scanner. BTW, I didn't go for the first time in years...principle.

Hill AFB used to prohibit all scanners as well, but since 2 years ago they have analog scanners spelled out in their "Allowed" list and digital scanners in their "Prohibited" list. They also have amateur radios in their "Allowed" list, which many use as an analog scanner anyway.

As far as having SF encrypted, I haven't heard that. I know it wasn't 2 years ago. I'll listen out and see what I can hear. Being in the position to coordinate amateur radio operators for the air show, I have access (and input) to the master ICS-205. All that received it were under strict orders from SF to not allow it to get out to anyone outside the "need to know" circles. This might just be their job of being overly cautious, I don't know. The one I gave my operators only contained the ham frequencies we'd be using for both show communications and if there was a mass casualty incident (MCI).

Thinking about silly option 1 (above), if they DO happen to know the difference and spot yours, you'll probably either have to give it up (not an option for most of us), or return to your vehicle and drop it off. With much of the parking being off base, you'd have to catch a outgoing shuttle, THEN upon returning, get in back of the line to the entry portals. With 300K (+ or -) visitors expected for each day, that could take a LONG time to get through. Your best choice is the one you first offered and that was to only bring your analog scanner.

I do plan to take only the old Pro95. Don't care about police at all but do like to monitor Fire & EMS.
I have VIP parking which will make getting back & forth to my vehicle easy because I do need to take
medicine etc.
Thanks again for all your replies.

They must be more lenient there or it may be up to the local base commander. At Langley they prohibited ANY radios of any kind. No scanners, no HAM, no FRS.....nada...zilch. Glad to see they have more common sense out your way.

Airshow Security

Today we followed the rules, https://theutahairshow.com/schedule/2018-prohibited-permitted-items/
Took no digital scanners.( the dont know what a digital scanner is} or we dont understand what they meant by the term digital scanner. The Captain told his group that digital scanners will have a laser in them.

But did take two ICOM's HT's to talk with my son.
And one pro97.

First guy was confused and had about 5 people over looking at them like they were guns.
So he got his boss, he flat out says no, take them back to your care.
I was getting a little, well when you follow the rules you stand up more than if you didn't know.
So after getting upset and the guy treating me like he was going to have the MP's escort me off.
But the MP's asked him to talk with the captain, Just like I wanted to do.

So he says he goes and talks with the captain. Comes back and so NO! I need you to leave now.
Well not so fast, phone comes out and I show them the list. He does not care.
Leave sir. NOPE. Captain walks over, after he told me he was not outside.

Says are we good, I start to explain, he stops me and says sir I am so sorry.
They are not on the prohibited list. And are list as ok.

So after he lets me get our stuff. He has all flight line Fake police(security) come over to him.
Says Raise your hand if you have the list of items that can and can not be allowed in?
Everyone raise their hand. So he asked the @ss that was giving me so much crap to see his.

He looks down and then says he does not have it. He made him leave.
He ask another for there's and it was brought out. And his pointed out the 20 minutes of misleading the public about what the person was right the whole time. He says stop acting like this is your first day.

He was not loud but firm. I just was very close to him since I was picking up our stuff.

OH and they dropped my scanner, back pop'd off and batteries came out.
They look at me and say sorry.

The show was not to great, Walked 3 miles after getting bused into the base.
The show items were not all there. C17 no life flight, no F15 that I seen.

Oh yea TAKE CASH. ATM line was a 2 hour wait or more. We didn't wait for it.
Left to eat and walked many more miles back and fourth.

So for the negative, but you should be aware.
When we came back the had a sign two feet from the security officers, No Walkie-Talkies.
I just told them to take to Capt Adams. The called him on the radio and he came right over.
And let them have it again. Asked who made the signs.

Well when we left he was in the face of the guy that told me to leave several times.

Not too good doing this without my main computer but I'm glad you vented your frustrations too. I paid $179 to get to get treated like that! I'll check here again Tuesday. Tomorrow I'll park outside the base with all my scanners and enjoy monitoring.

Well done! For the most part, SF is pretty helpful, but I've met my share of real bone heads with an attitude. Fortunately, we have people in the Unified Command vehicle and can easily escalate something upline if needed.

C17 no life flight, no F15 that I seen.
The C-17 replaced the B-52 that had to scratch due to mechanical problems. (Too bad because the Buff provides SO much more shade!) I don't recall if Life Flight was there or not, but there were two F-15E's that were parked near the North Med tent as indicated on this map: Hill Air Force Base > Home > Warriors Over The Wasatch > Show-Map. (I was in the tent on Thursday setting up a radio when they taxied in and about ruptured my eardrums when they swung their nose pointing south.)

Well when we left he was in the face of the guy that told me to leave several times.
Gotta love it! I wonder who's going to be spending the night picking up all the FOD from the ramp?
