As documented on the E1 Yahoo group, some of the units from Circuit city appear to be pre-recall - there was a fault with some of the early E1s that posed a fire hazard if batteries were left in the radio while AC is applied. Accept only those that have a Drake sticker, which I understand is found near or in the battery compartment. These are ones RL Drake has refurbished, and from all accounts, work even slightly better than the originals. I'm going to see if I can pull the original RDI comments, which has the affected serial numbers and will post in a few minutes.

Proceed with caution.

[Edit] Found it in the E1 Yahoo archives - note that some newer versions also had problems with the displays going blank or getting vertical streaks through it - moral is, save your receipt and box. Here's the exact announcement from Eton -

Eton has issued a recall for the Eton E1XM AM/FM/Shortwave/XM Satellite Radio receiver, for units found in serial range 3,067 - 5,462.
The issue that Eton has discovered is a missing trace on the circuit board. In the event that a customer has the unit plugged into an
electrical outlet, using the AC adapter for power, and has a set of batteries in the unit, it could cause battery heat-up, leakage and
possibly rupture. This may cause fire and/or personal injury.

Since the reports of display failure seem to be going down, I would assume some changes have occurred in later production units. Remember, Drake is the service center for this radio. Be certain to save your receipt and box.

By the way, the E1 uses a rather odd F connector for the external antenna jack. The E1 group has diagrams of how some folks solved this rather odd dilemma. And this is a portatop - something of a cross between a portable and a true tabletop - that handles a decent antenna well, from all reports so far. Radio Database Int'l sells a White Paper on this radio - it's a very in depth analysis, very technical in nature. If you're interested, it's worth having. It doesn't have all the little tricks that folks have found on the Yahoo group, however....

Mike if that were true, Circuit city would have to say that they are "factory refurbished" would they not? The Satellite 500 I purchased from Universal Radio was listed as "refurbished". It still works great and pulls in DX almost as well as my Drake.

Maybe so, but is that any less reason to be careful? I'm no expert on marketing laws (and no, I don't play one on TV, hi) but they should say something. If they're supposed to be new in the box, well, they're not, from what I've read so far. Some have been missing the CD Rom that has the owner's manual, some had their boxes opened previously....

If you happen to get a good one, I can tell you just from playing with one at the last Winterfest for a little while, that it's a very good DX machine. There are, I'm pretty sure, reviews on EHam on this little gem. In addition, the E1 Yahoo group is a virtual goldmine of information 73s Mike

Poin taken Mike. And yes just like you I read the reviews and check out the yahoo groups. I've been Reading the WRTVH and Passport too for many years.

If it doesn't work out you could return it to the local Circuit City or even buy the $40 extended warranty.

If we went by some of the reports and horror stories on Radioreference and the Yahoo groups we may never even buy a digital scanner.

As always with consumer electronics, YMMV. ;)

I got one at the last minute and it seems to work near perfect. It's a lot of technology for a portable swr!

Hello,

The deal disappeared the day after it was mentioned here. I did not need one but I passed it on to some friends.

A friend of mine got one that he ordered at the reduced price and it obviously a demo/returned/used unit. The inner bag was unsealed and one of the styrofoam packing pieces were broken. The serial number was in the 24xx range and the firmware was Version 1.2 indicating a 2004 or earlier unit.

I remember that the web page did not mentioned used or demo.

Well, actually the deal was on a few day prior to my post, but I didn't see it until two days before. It had been on the E1 Yahoo group already. Looks like a mixed bag depending what Circuit City warehouse your actual radio came from. Some of these radios must have been display models. The serial number range appears to be low but not consecutive.
