There are enough of us here that are into amateur radio I'm sure that it would be a popular forum. With so many options available to the radio op from HF Voice to digital modes to space communication. I for one would like to see this added to RR.

You bet! Here's a great resource:

http://www.arrl.org/hamradio.html

If you have any questions, feel free to either send me a PM or create a thread in the tavern. I'm sure your question will be answered in no time.

It's a great hobby. I have been active since '88 and have always found something to do. One of my favorite activities is contesting (trying to make as many contacts in a given period of time, say over a weekend), chasing dx (trying to talk with someone in a country that you haven't yet), APRS (a way to hook up your computer to track where other hams are located that are also running aprs software). As you can see, there is quite a bit you can do!

Good luck and once again, feel free to ask any questions that you may have.

I too will soon be getting into Amateur Radio, I’ve been in contact with a couple of guys from the local Ham Club and they have been very helpful. I had originally contacted them about the location of any GMRS repeaters in the local area for I had recently go involved with that radio service also. I found out that they had a GMRS repeater and had asked permission to use that repeater and we got in to discussions leading to the HAM side of radio. I was give a link to HamTestOnLine and have been studying and taking practice exams there and when the wife and family get back from our vacation to Arkansas next week I’ll be getting in contact with these guys again for one of them is a VE so I can take my Tech Exam. I’ve already bought an ICOM IC-V82 radio and have it programmed with all the local repeaters and some of the VHF police frequencies. It is really a very easy radio to program and operate, of course I haven’t transmitted on it yet since I’m not licensed. One thing I like about the Ham radio that I have is that it shares many of the same accessories as my GMRS radios which are the ICOM IC-F21GM.

Amateur forum, FRS/GMRS forum, Marine forum, CB forum, Subspace forum.........

Guys...give it up. Asked and answered.

This website already has a clear focus and it is the most popular such board. The main focus is scanner enthusists and all forms of monitoring.

This place can't be everything to everybody and we shouldn't ask them to try.

I'm a ham and I'm into everything to do with radios but it is a good thing to enjoy the various sites that specialize in certain areas. Even a super-sized grocery store can't carry everything in foodland.

Ham's have QRZ.com and eham.net, arrl.org and numerous other places that cater just to them.

Even so this site offers its HF Monitoring forum which covers everything in that wide chunk of spectrum.

Let this site do what it does best.

Still not satisfied? Want to start your own board and make it what you want? How about for FREE? !! And easy to set up and administrate? !!

Then goto www.invisionfree.com Free and Easy Forum Boards just like this one. You own it, you set it up, you run it. They work great. I have two of them. Did I mention they were free?

If anyone would be interested, I am administrator on a new forum (owned by kb8ukl) that everyone is welcome to use for Amateur radio use. At this point there are not many members, but if there is interest let me know what topics you would like and I would be more than willing to create them for you. I would even be willing to create a forum for FRS/GMRS etc if the group would use it.

Here's the URL:

Lighten up! We get enough posturing and harumphing on the QRZ forums from the thousand word per minute old-old-timer Extras. There is always room for diversity of viewpoints and that's why RR.com is so successful.

All right, before this spins into a "mine is bigger than yours" thread I am going to close it.
