Brad,

It looks like you have the links. I will metion that the tech license is not very difficult to obtain. Pick up a book (or order online) and use the practice tests at QRZ and you should be good to go. http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl

And yes, you will legally be able to carry your scanner or have one mobile. That isn't to say you might meet an officer who thinks otherwise but you should be good to go...

Yes, by all means, get you a ham license. But don't ever use it for anything other than getting on the air for ragchew or carrying a scanner.

Use it for anything public service related, like disaster relief, parades, storm spotting/chasing, etc., and you'll immediately be branded a "whacker" who's only part of the problem, not the solution, by a good number of people on this site.

Pay day today. Why did I die? Dog did it.

All whackers unite. Yellow lights and antenna helmets for all!!..LOL j/k

I know there are several agencies in Kentucky and Florida that have trained their dispatchers as Amateur Radio Operators so in the event of the oh crap, they have certified persons on staff to operate on Amateur repeaters since they will be the only repeaters in service and are extremely portable.

Become a ham, and enjoy ALL ASPECTS OF THE HOBBY.

Join ARES/RACES, and rag chew.

Wacker is an attitude, not an automatic lable given to those who want to help.

That is the honest truth. Just don't start a club and give everyone a rank or buy so many lights you need a bigger alternator. :)

One guy at the state police post who installs radios in the cruisers was told by the post commander it would be a good idea to get your amature radio license.... so it's good to the Indiana State Police "gets it" too.
