Hello. I have a question I hope anyone on here can answer for me.

I am just wondering if anyone on here would know what the codes stand for the Ambulances use when they are telling Dispatch or the Hospital like: Code 4 CTAS 1, ETC.

If anyone knows and can give me the list as to what each of the CODES and CTAS Levels stand for. I would appreciate it. So every time I hear them say it. I will know wut it stands for.

So I will be waiting for any replies to this question. Thanks.

CTAS is a scale used to discribe the condition or urgent needs of a patient.
The lower the number the higher the priority.
CTAS 1 patient needs to be seen a doctor immediately (life and death stuff).
CTAS 5 patient usually sit in the waiting room for serveal hours.
We've been using it in NS for a couple years now.

Code 5 has always meant "Obvious Death".

In all my years of listening, I've never heard 44 or 4.4

Heard it used this afternoon, actually. If there is a Paramedic on board here they can confirm or correct, I think it the section of the Ontario paramedic act regarding obvious death. Code 7 has changed from your list Metal, to unable to offload patient in emergency room due to bed/stretcher shortage. Chronic problem here in Windsor, I am sure in the rest of the province as well.

Ok. I have the codes now. Thanks for that info.

Now I am just looking to see if anyone can tell me whatt each of the CTAS Levels stand for, Like: CTAS LEVEL 1, CTAS LEVEL 2, CTAS LEVEL 3, CTAS LEVEL 4, ETC.

So if anyone can tell me what each of them stand for that should help me out and I should be all set to go then. Because I will know then what each of them stand for when I hear it next time.

So I will be waiting for any replies to this question. Thanks again.

There has to be a pdf link for that CTAS poster, it makes a nice print out (on letter size) and good for reference. I was looking for that link to post here yesterday but can't seem to find it anymore.

Thanks for the replies.

Now this is for IdleMonitor. Where abouts did you get that image of the CTAS Levels. Did you find it on the internet. If so. What site did you get it from. So I can go to that site and print it off from there. Since it is not printing right for me when I try to do it off of here.
So if you can tell me. I would appreciate it.

I will be waiting for your reply to this question and anyone else who might know. Thanks.

Can't remember where I got it from, but it's been looming around for a while. But the link that was posted though is a pdf and that'll work too.

Ok thanks. That PDF File of it worked.
Thanks for all your help. Now I will know what each CTAS Level stands for along with the 10 Codes when I hear our ambulance talking to the Hospital giving the condition of the patient or any ambulance talking to their hospital when I go to other places.

So thanks again.

Hey MetalCarnage,

Your codes could use a little update:

Code 1 - Deferrable
Code 2 - Scheduled
Code 3 - Urgent
Code 4 - Emergent
Code 5 - Obviously Dead
Code 6 - Legally Dead
Code 7 - Vehicle Down staffed
Code 8 - Standby
Code 9 - Out of service
Code 0 / Code 10 - Administration

Notes:

- Lights and siren are used on code 4 calls only

- Obvious death as per BLS Patient Care Standards 2.0 (1-54, "Criteria for Presuming Death" - 2a, 2b)

- Legal death as per BLS Patient Care Standards 2.0 (1-54, "Criteria for Presuming Death" - 1)

- Code 7 may have taken on other uses in particular locations, but it's true meaning is Vehicle Down staffed, ie. 1234 Code 7 to station 1 means vehicle 1234 will be down staffed when it arrives at station 1.

Code 7 has typically been used to mean "No Patient Carried". IE: "Niagara 2120 patient has signed and refused, we're code 7 from this call". I too have never heard 44 or "4.4". It is NOT a standard code. It's possible it is a code that is just used locally where you heard it. Every service has a couple of those.

10-9 typically means "repeat last transmission", however in the world of Toronto EMS it means "with patient on board" - eg: "5050 is 10-9 to sunnybrook" means "we're headed to sunnybrook with pt on board".

Maybe my hearing can use an update.......and I heard 54. Thanks!
