I was talking to our chief this afternoon and watched him grab his hand held by the antenna.
Lucky it was one of the older radios. That, and he sorta out ranks me.

I have to admit, I don't believe I've seen a whip folded over like that with a rubber band...pretty clever. Usually we see the stock whip replaced with some POS out-of-band $10 stubby from Amazon. Nothing like a VHF radio transmitting into a knockoff 900 MHz stubby antenna. 🤦‍♂️

The military has a bad habit of doing the same, with their blade/tape antennas kept folded down during use. If you want to keep your communications very short range, that's one way to do it.

the best one i have seen was them taking the antenna off completely and using it that way saying that it is optional accessory that they did not need. that one was fun to explain to them that the antenna is mandatory for it to work.

The blades were made to fold. I guess with the Falcon III it will drop power to 1 watt with bad SWR.

Come on guys, how do you pull a radio out of your deep pockets, with the handle (sorry) antenna. For a long time in the UK, we had Police radio comms with radios designed with really short antennas which performance wise, sucked but sort of worked with the antenna high in the centre of the service area. Users also use them with antennas horizontal, shielded and inside thick coats with remote mics - they're tools! If the long antenna is too long for the users, sometimes (marine especially) they just cut them short with wire cutters and tape the end up.
