Hello all,
I have several DPV model antennas, both UHF and VHF versions. They are having some issues with the fiberglass. I was thinking of re coating them with a coat of fiberglass gel. The next thing is to paint them, I believe they would benefit from a gray color to reduce the horrendous sun here in the desert. What would be a proper paint (one without any metallic base) to spray them with?
TIA

I paint all my antennas, metal, plastic and fiberglass. I've had good success with Rust-Oleum all in one primer and paint but have recently switched to the more original formula and a separate primer. This is the paint in the pictures below, the old, takes forever to dry stuff but its really bullet proof after a couple of days. The color is very dull non reflective and blends in with the day and night sky pretty good and its available at most Home Depot stores.

For primer on fiberglass just use a good automotive primer. For bare metal use a self etching primer which has phosphoric acid that treats the metal and really digs in and sticks well. One coat of primer is fine and minimum two top coats.

Don't forget to clean and degrease the antenna first and my favorite thing for that is "LAs Totally Awesome Orange All Purpose Cleaner" available at Dollar Tree stores for $99c a half gallon and that's cheaper than drinking water. Its also great for cleaning oil off the driveway, cleaning car floor mats and giving a pair of 43ft antennas a complete scrub down, which I've done and I had to buy up all the bottles my local store had for that.
