Hi,
I won a Heil HC-5 mic element in my club raffle, and now I need to know how to get it going.
I have an instruction sheet, but it doesn't say whether it is a dynamic, electret or condenser type.
Does any one have experience with these and can advise me about an amplifier please?

Cheers, Camerart

2000 ohms is a reasonable match to modern solid state radios that came with either a dynamic or electret condenser element. The level from the Heil will be good for a dynamic mic and a little low for condenser type but you can usually make that up with the radio's mic gain.

Placement of a Heil element inside an existing mic housing can be a science experiment to get it to sound right. If the element is too far inside the housing it can take on a hollow sound. I like to fill the mic housing with dense foam rubber then have the Heil mic element right up against the sound hole or grille of the housing so that has less influence on the sound.

I don't recall ever seeing a mic preamp that you can install inside a mic. You would have to provide it power and it could be susceptible to RFI. If you can find a mic pre it would be better suited inside the radio housing with an RF choke at the mic input side.

What kind of radio is the OP going to use the HC-5 with?

Hi B,
Thanks, but not much information really.
They talk about High low impedance, and I see this one is 2,000Ohms at 1,000Hz, is this high or low?

An I want to konw about buying an amp to go inside a mike too.

Hi P,
I have a few amplifiers, they all seemed to need a higher input to them.

I think this element would be better suited to someone more skilled than I am, so I think I'll sell it, and let them appreciate it more than I would.

I have an FT 817nd, where it's mic is fine, and I hope to aim for Morse, so talking would take a back seat really.

Thanks for your comprehensive anser.
