In looking at repeaters in the Philadelphia area, there aren't any 900MHz that I can find. How popular is this band?

Not as much as 2m/440. In NC there aren't but 6 listed in the repeater journal. I would assume (and we know what that means) is that the equiptment isint as common as 2M/440. Hope I stated that right and that helps.

In Ma. we have a very active group on 900 mhz with a lot of repeaters many that are linked. Most of the equipment is Motorola stuff. It is easy and relatively cheap to get into with the used equipment. Some of the Moto stuff will cross over to ham use with just reprogramming. With the linked systems I have had coverage from Cape Cod to Boston and the middle of the state. Repeaters are available and antennas are easy to deal with due to the size of them.

Well, that may change now that Alinco is coming out with a 900mHz HT. Yeah its low power, but the FIRST amateur 33cm radio!!!!. They are just testing the waters, and will probably come out with a Monoband 900 mobile to go with the other mono band mobiles they have.

I would say that its VERY dependent on where you are located. Most likely concentrated in the area of large metro cities.

I use 900 during the commute through Atlanta. I use 3 different repeaters that have a lot of activity.

There is one 900mhz machine on the air in the DC metro area...I had a 900Mhz Motorola Spectra in my car for three years and never heard a peep on the thing...

Here in SE Florida there's quite a few 900 repeaters. Many of them are linked up to increase the coverage. Lot's of 900 repeaters in the New England area too. GARY N4KVE

We have a 900Mhz Repeater that I use here in the Indianapolis,Indiana area that is just down the street from me. I have a 900Mhz base and a 900Mhz handheld and this is a great band to use for Ham Communications.

The Philly machine on 927.8875 should work for you. I can work it no problem from Medford. The other machine in Depford on 927.6375 I cannot hear for some reason. I may need to repoint my yagi. Anyway I'm always listening on the 927.8875 machine when I'm in the shack but its mostly the 440 machine coming through on the link.
