Hello,
Very new at this, so please bear with me a bit.
Have a new SDRPlay RSPdx, and am very interested in listening to Utilities, PD and FD, emergency. services, etc. Broad tastes.

As to be expected, my antenna setup is not the greatest, so I would like to find a way to possibly catching more transmissions.

I know nothing about amateur Repeaters.
But, apparently, many of the items i mentioned above are re-broadcast on Repeaters.

Is this basically correct ? Only done by Lic. Amateurs, or also by Gov't agencies ?
Or, am I not understanding at all the purpose and use of Repeaters.

And, when I see, e.g., a freq listed as 448.1750 and a 5 MHz offset, what
do i tune to ? Not sure how to handle the offset.

If someone might give me a few words on using Repeater(s) listings like the ones
in RepeaterBook, would be most appreciative.

Would be most appreciative. Very.

Thanks,
Bob

No Util, PD, FD, or commercial comms will be rebraocast on amateur frequencies.
Only thse holding an amateur license may broadcast on the amateur freqs.
The offset refers to the input frequency TO the repeater. 448.175 is the frequency the repeater transmits on. It is the FROM frequency you would put in your scanner. You could also program in the offset freq, 443.175, and you might hear stations closer to you transmitting.

Repeaterbook is a site that publishes amateur repeater info from multiple sources, and depends on users to confirm the validity of the data. It's a good source of info if you are wanting to monitor amateur radio. They are adding GMRS repeaters to their listings as well.

The things you mentioned you want to listen to are going to be here...and not in repeaterbook.

Nearly every thing you listen to on your scanner comes thru a repeater, with the exception of point-to-point (air band, ship to shore, etc).

The offset is the difference between the repeater input, and the repeater output. Unless you have a very specific reason to, most of your scanning comes from the repeater output.

Repeaterbook is primarily for amateur radio repeaters, none of which will carry what you said you want to listen to.

and there are only 8 of them

There is only 8 because the list is just starting to be compiled. The biggest hurdle is getting repeater owners aware, and then adding their repeater information to the database. If everyone here that uses a GMRS repeater would contact the repeater owner and have them list it, the database would expand quickly because most repeater owners know other repeater owners.

Also, many GMRS users also have their Amateur radio ticket and belong to local clubs where they can get the word out. This would probably be the best way to get listings fast tracked and added to the database. Mentioning it on ( I hate to say it) Facebook could also help tremendously.

If the GMRS entries are maintained like the ham entries, it will be.....well, let's just call it hit or miss and let it go at that. Many of the state page coordinators are not particularly conscientious about keep the listings current.

Yeah, I've noticed that. It's still a useful resource, though.
