To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

When I try to program a GMRS repeater pair using the ANYTONE CPS the transmit frequency gives an error message "out of frequency range.
Yet the 878 Manual set the UHF limits as 450-480MHz. Any ideas

This Anytone radio is a ham radio radio and is most likely locked down to only transmit on ham frequencies.

You can just monitor frequencies outside of ham radio, but not transmit on them.

You will need to purchase a radio accepted for GMRS.

Check the model tab in the Anytone programming software. Mine says Band 1 which allows amateur and commercial freqs. Other bands will limit to ham only or other countries band plans. i cant remember if the main programming software will allow you to change the band or if you need to download a separate little program.

The Anytone 878's are a Part 90/95 certified radio, and Can be programmed for commercial frequencies.

There are some vids on Youtube that will show you how to make the changes in the software.

OK - I am asking the Anytone D878VII Plus to operate in the US 2M and 440 Ham bands in both analog and DMR modes.
AND to transmit in the US GMRS UHF band.
I obtained the radio from Connect Systemsl
Here's what happened with AT_Options downloaded from a Pacific Northwest Amateur website.
I read the radio and discovered that it had Band Plan 7.
I changed the band plan to 14 and wrote that successfully to the radio, but it wiped out my good amateur codeplug.
When I tried to rewrite my amateur codeplug (no UHF TX above 450 MHz) I got a band error.
Using AT_options I switched the bandplan back to 7 and reloaded my ham codeplug with no trouble
I tried using AT_Options to set Test Mode--and reloaded my ham frequencies to the radio with no trouble.
As far as I can tell, the radio did not go into test mode.

Any ideas?

Thanks again

Can't address "Test Mode" but the rest sounds like known and expected behavior. Changing modes erases the code plug, and the code plug contains the mode (which must match the mode the radio is in).

Yes, as was mentioned above, it wipes out your programming. When you are on band plan 14, you need to use a code plug that was created in band plan 14. You can't use your 7 plan. There are ways out of there of hex editing the codeplug to band plan 14, or you just need to start from scratch and copy and paste what you can (export/import).

The code plugs are specific to the radio band plan they were created with.

The best way to avoid problems is to export the saved code plug as a CSV. The "read" radio with the new bandplan and import the codeplug from the csv file.

That works but with a lot of filling in information manually or turning things on or off as needed since not everything is transferred in the CSV file. If you have a huge code plug it could take hours to go through all the channels and make them right. Been there and done that a few times.

Save your code plug. Go here, scroll down to Band Error and five ways you can fix it then download the "AT Options" program. Then do what the instructions say to modify the band plan.
Then you will have to export your code plug to CSV then read your radio then import the CSV file back into the code plug read from the radio, then you can download it back into the radio.
