• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a mix of both 900's and 1000's in my fleet for public works. They both do the job for them and rarely see them come in for anything other thana battery from time to time. I also watch the fleet with a DIagnostix box and they are very stable when in operation.

Do not recommend them. I've had to deal with many issues relating to screens and even had a few where the accessory screw came out. Overall the audio on them sound very subpar to me as well. If the radio is for monitoring or public works... Maybe... But I absolutely do not recommend them for public safety.

Public safety needs high tier models. The low tier range was meant for cost effective low budget mission critical for basic uses. Many though low ball communications and go for the cheapest to make it work.

Public Safety doesn't really need anything more than a 6000 series. 8000, if they truly need dual or tri-band operation. If you're a salesman, every one needs an APX-8000 series radio along with an 8500 series in their vehicle. That's they way some salesman think, at least.

Our Department has 800 of them and they hold up just fine, No need for the higher teir for anything but FD
As said above NYPD has over 7000 of them and counting and a lot of FDs around me are going to them or the APX4000, as the 6000 and above isn't offering anything more unless you go to the XE, or need a option the 900 or 4000 will not offer.

Ah, the APX900 dog catcher/trash collector special. And it's still 1800+/- bucks. Nothing but a XPR with P25 so they can automatically double the price. Gotta love LMR!

They are just over $900.00 on my contract and includes accessories like the desk charger and spare battery and a P25 flashcode that includes OTAP. On my 5th year of the contract that started with APX1000's and now are 900's.

Meh, low rent radio. An EMS user bought around 100 of them. At first, there were major complaints about transmit audio being low/muddy- this was resolved with firmware updates and teaching users how to properly use the RSM. The biggest downer is no RF connector on the UC, this particular EMS outfit is like Mother Jugs and Speed, and refuse to install mobiles and yet they respond to remote parts of the county where in vehicle portable coverage is dubious at best. I advised them to opt for the 6000Li (which will support a PSM with antenna) but they cheaped out.

They use different batteries than everyone else on 6000/7000/8000 so during structure fires, mass casualties, etc they're on their own for battery support as everyone else supports the 6/7/8K and XTS5000 batteries on their battery trucks.

A few of them have been to the depot for: cracked/damaged displays, speaker failures, one was comatose after a rain storm. For animal services (can't call them ACOs anymore), public works, etc probably fine. But I would NOT consider this a public safety duty radio.

Run several hundred APX900 radios for facilities maintenance, custodial, and crews that need an IS rated radio but not for use in high noise environments, they only have one microphone. Other get APX4000's model 2 if they do not page other users, and model 3's if they do need paging, just easier to use for paging and directly entering radio numbers. APX4000 has two microphones for high noise areas and IS rated. APX4000 model 3's go to security types, and then APX6000XE for fire. APX900 is our "entry level" radio and appears almost like the Trbo XPR7550e in use at many other locations across the country. Run a combined Astro/Trbo system that is nationwide, and the APX900 build quality is much like the Trbo XPR7550e, and probably has some parts compatibility. PTT and side button failure requires a new case, have had some LCD display problems, and some screws to come out (threadlocker before fielding helps this). Although, even the APX4000 antenna connector has been known to come out (threadlocker needed here too). The APX900 should only be given to those that are gentle with their radios, and use it as an accessory to a cell phone, light users.
