When I try to d/l from scanner or u/l to scanner, the software tells me to select a COM port. I can find no option in the software to do that. Only Com port on the computer is Com 3 (according to some Kenwood programming software used with a Kenwood radio) The pop up that says select a COM port, will not allow a COM port to be entered. Windows 10 if that matters.
Any help appreciated.

Assuming you are using a USB cable be sure that the cable is plugged into the USB port and into the radio and that the radio is on. The Com Port selection is done after you select Write to Radio, in the pop-up.

If you are using an old style DB-9 cable and a legacy serial port the com port assignment is to the port and not the cable.

Check Device Manager to see what the Com Ports are available and if the Com Port number is over 8 change it to a number below 8. Some software does not support higher Com Port numbers. (Not sure if ARC-6 does or not...)

Butel software seems to have problems with the latest releases of Windows 10. Did it ever work before? I don’t have an R6 but Butel software worked on one of my Uniden scanners for a long time (2008 to around 2019) when Windows 10 did a major upgrade/change. I had to give up and switch to a different software.

I started getting the same problem you are experiencing. I got the same popup box saying it couldn't access the scanner. I looked in the Windows device management section and it was showing the cable connected as COM=3. Tried different cables, USB drivers, etc - finally switched to FreeScan (a program for Uniden scanners) and everything worked fine with the cable and drivers. So I concluded the problem was Butel software , not my cable or USB driver. FreeScan only supports some older Uniden scanners so that won't help you. Others have reported similar problems with older scanners and receivers using Butel with the latest Windows 10.

Than you for your replies. I took the easy way out and got different software. Already had the RT Systems cable so I got their software and it works just great. Heck, I might even ask Santa for another R6 radio. Really like those radios.

Good to know that RT Systems software and cable works well. I have a R2 and debated getting a R6. If I do, I know what software to get!

Well, it finally got me, I ordered a R6 on Thursday and it was delivered today at 2pm. I also ordered the RT Systems software and cable with the order from Ham Radio Outlet. Took me about an hour to load the receiver with frequencies using the software. Boy was it easy compared to manually loading stuff like I have to on the R2. I also use software to update the R30 ever since I got it.

Now I have a R30, R6, and R2. The R30 is the most sensitive on VHF, but the R6 does well for it size, better than the R2.

If you decide to get an R6, the RT Systems software is the one to get. Thanks @speeder
