I take mine to the Michigan Air Shows every year and have never had a problem and I see many others using them too.

Have fun and good luck.

i HIGHLY recommend bringing at least one scanner. I usually bring two, and i usually find that people around me become very interested in the radio traffic as the show progresses, so i don't bring headphones anymore, i just crank the speakers.

Each individual airshow may have different rules, you'll have to contact them to ask.

It seems, for instance, that ALL California Air Force bases absolutely ban scanners/two way radios on the flightline, at least. And they search.

I brought 2 scanners to March ARB last year and had no problems. They do search but said nothing of the scanners. :)

Anyway since the MacDill show is over, let us know how your experience went with bringing radios onto the base.

Nothing mentioned on the Web site [FAQ] where it would usually
be posted, but as we all know Your Milage may vary.

Would Scanners be allowed is a two part question.

a.) At the Air Show - Yes [Back in the parking lots etc]

b.) On the Flight Line - Typically see the FAQ's but then again rules/regulations are all subject to change.

Going to Macdill AFB this weekend, are scanners allowed ?

Last year at Lackland AFB, 3 of us went together each with a scanner and earbuds. Had no problem bringing them in through the checkpoint at the flight line entrance, but about 30 minutes into being there, we noticed a security forces personnel following us around. A few minutes after we had noticed him, he approached us and demanded to see our scanners. His main concern was that they weren't 2-ways, and he looked my scanner over up and down while I encouraged him to look for himself that there was no PTT button anywhere on it. He seemed satisfied, and asked what we were listening to. I told him we were listening to the pilots as they performed their demonstrations; at the exact same time I could hear the security forces in my earbud, but luckily the SF officer didn't seem interested in reading the text tags on the front of the scanner.

security are very nosy.. well depends on the company but i guess they just want to make sure they could not interfere with the pilots communications but seriously.. who would be able to obtain the frequencies lol, I still cant figure out what system the airplanes uses but i dont intend to even use them...

I went to the MacDill show and they allowed my scanner to pass the security checkpoint after about 4 or 5 minutes of looking at it from evEry angle imaginable. Even was insopecting the antenna for 2 minutes straight but none the less I enjoyed listening to what was going to happen before the people around me did. Of course there was the ones going wow you can listen to those jets and planes on that thing. LOL.

Yes, he was pretty nosy too inspecting my scanner, but I wasn't bothered in the slightest. He only wanted to be sure it wasn't a 2-way, and I was content to let him figure that out. From the number of times he turned it end over end looking, I'm guessing he hadn't seen too many scanners before. After checking my PSR-500 out for about 2-3 minutes though, he only glanced at my two buddies' Pro-96's.

As far as frequencies pilots use, check out the Monitoring Times Airshow Guide(don't have a link at the moment), which has the majority of frequencies used by different demonstrations. Most of these worked and I found a few more frequencies specific to the airfield I was at. I listened to the pilots during every demonstration last year, except for the F-22. Heard him talking to the air-boss just as the plane lifted off the ground, who then told the pilot to go discrete, and not another thing heard, even with furious limit searching.

Most of the information is listed on the informatioin site about airshow, some military installations will not allow any radio scanners at their shows some will and normally not a problem at public airports,as long as you don't try to bring a 2 way radio in.

Most certainly not. You will be arrested and shipped off to be part of the packing up party at Gitmo.

Of course they are allowed. Do your research in regards to comms and make sure you have some good ear phones. Some of the buds with the "marshmallow" padding do a remarkably good job at blocking outside noise. I never head to an airshow without my radio anymore.

Depends on where you go if they are allowed. I saw a flyer for a military base recently that was having a air show and it said that no scanners or other communication receiving devices were allowed.

Took my Pro-97 to the Tyndall show and didn't even get a second glance when we went thru the screening. The flyers were pretty quick to point out 'No 2 way radios or walkie talkies' but I don't think they were real concerned about it.

The 2009 March/April edition of the "National Communications" magazine reports on pages 17 - 20 that the Airshow at Barksdale Airforce Base, May 10 and 11, 2009 will allow scanners.

At Quonset Point, RI (for the last few years) no problems at all bringing the scanner in. Scanner was my BCD-396T with bulky leather clip case.

I am always afraid someone is going to say that my BCD-396T transmits, due to the FUNC+Menu key on the side.

When I go to an airshow I feel very safe. Safer then almost anywhere. Mainly due to the military security extra police details, Triage set up and M-16s at the ready.
