• Effective immediately we will be deleting, without notice, any negative threads or posts that deal with the use of encryption and streaming of scanner audio.

We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

If you violate these guidelines your post will be deleted without notice and an infraction will be issued. We are not against discussion of this issue. You just need to do it in the right place. For example:

Hi all :)

I've been slowly adding updates to the statewide Arizona Public Service Corporation trunking system. If you don't know normally listen to trunking, you may not have noticed that some elements that you might expect to hear on other frequencies, are actually hidden here.

For example, did you know that the Arizona Division of Emergency Management has 3 talk groups on this statewide system? It is one of their redundant radio systems that they test and would use in case of a state emergency.

Here's my frequency challenge for you. It will cost you as little as 5 minutes of listening to help out. If you spend more time monitoring, then that will increase your assistance to this challenge.

There are a couple of goals:

1) ID which frequency has a control channel on it in your neighborhood.
- - You will use the frequencies that will be provided below. If you've never listened to a Motorola trunked system before, one of the channels will have a continuos machine type sound on the frequency. It only goes away, if it changes to one of the other frequencies associated with the trunked system. It does not sound like static, but an actual "running machine" type sound.

2) ID the system site number of the control channel frequency that you are listening to on your radio.
- - In order to do this, you will need to have a scanner or radio that has been tapped so that the computer will interpret the control channel data for you. I highly recommend the Unitrunker software as it requires little work on your part, does not require any anything but a cable from the discriminator tap into the sound card of the computer. NO other hardware required :)

3) ID the talkgroups that you hear on your local system.
- - This will require that you have trunk-tracking scanner. This may require dedicated listening, that is exclusive to the local system. This will help to ID talkgroups that may be heard statewide. If you are in the southern part of the state, you will want to be sure that you've set your scanner to monitor the system as a "Splinter" system.

I'll be happy to be the "goto" person on this. I am getting very familiar with 4 different tower locations.

Please help contribute to this challenge. Even if you only want to help under goal number 1, it will help us to correct/update the data on this system.

- Please report which frequency that you are hearing.

- Please report which tower location you think you are hearing, if you are not using Unitrunker or some type of computer software which ID's the transmitting towers "site number".
- If you can ID the tower location, please state that it is a positive ID.

- Please report any associated frequencies that you notice with this control channel, whether it be via your scanner or a trunk tracking computer software.
- Only report the frequencies associated to the same control channel.

- Please report any Talk Groups that you run across on each site. Even if you can't ID who was on the Talk Group, this will help in determining on which sites these Talk Groups will be heard.

I will then assimilate all of your wonderful input and get this over to the system admin for inclusion into the APS Trunk System.

The frequencies will be in a follow-on post right after this one..

Thanks for your help.

I am un-sure of the site which I am recieving on this frequency (860.3375):

860.3375 Shaw Butte Phoenix Maricopa
860.3375 Thompson Peak Phoenix Maricopa
860.3375 White Tanks Mountain Phoenix Maricopa
----- SID: 5C1Dh-0001 -- Talk group ID: 4848 (Unknown)

I am 75% positive I am recieving Towers mountain on (860.3125):

860.3125 Towers Mountain 2.6 mi NW Crown King Yavapai
----- SID: 5C1Dh-0025 -- Talk group ID: 4848 (Unknown)

Looks like these are already in the database, probably no help here.

I'll try some more later, I have my doubts that anymore will work here on the westside in peoria.

Hopefully some more people will jump on these and find more..

Just a reminder to those folks running UniTrunker ...

Most networked systems announce (1) backup control channels for the currently monitored site and also (2) the control channels of neighboring sites. To see a list of neighbor sites use the [V]iew -> Ste to see if any adjacent sites have been found. To see the control channels of these neighbor sites you can use the [C]hannel view.

Great! That's one of the frequencies that I was able to monitor for a little while last night from my location, to the southeast of Tucson. TG 4848 seems to have a lot of activity on it with "Operations" and the field guys for APS. Hopefully you might hear which "Operations" it is. As far as figuring out the site, if you're just using your scanner, be sure to notate what frequencies your scanner is moving to, when the scanner follows the conversation. That'll help provide a clue on which site it might be.

Thanks,

You should be able to hear 864.45mhz. That one is located on Mt Lemmon. You might also be able to hear 855.9375mhz.

Also, try the 860.3375mhz tonight. That one is from the Phoenix area, but unsure which site.

See if any of those work for you...

I will be traveling to Gold Canyon (near Apache Junction) tomorrow for about 3 weeks. In previous visits I have had trouble understanding the way the statewide system is set up. I am not sure which location would be the closest for to me to monitor. I do have a scanner that has a discriminator tap on it . I use Trunker software on my computer to decode the datastream. If you could tell me what frequencies to monitor, I would be glad to monitor them and see if I can help.

Hello,

As an experienced trunked radio DXer let me throw in my two cents.

You never know what signals you can pickup so I search the 800 band (851.000 to 868.9875 with a 12.5 KHz step) looking for control channels. I can usually recognize Motorola, EDACS, or P25 control channels by how they sound. The different types of Motorola systems sound slightly different and it is almost to the point where I can determine if the system is a Type 1, Type 2, or Smartzone by listening to the idle pattern of the system. I can usually tell when a voice frequency is active because the pattern changes. I am sure there are Motorola Smartzone systems around your home QTH that you can listen to get a feel for what they sound like.

With trunker you may need to go into the options menu, change Neighbors to display on the screen, and restart the program. The frequencies displayed gives you nearby sites to try.

You can also get useful information from a Pro96, 396T, or 996T although not as complete as using the various versions of trunker. Some recent scanners will display the site id as well as the sysid.

I am going to Az at the end of September so I will be scanning this system as well.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for helping out. Apache Junction would put within listenin range the towers within Maricopa County, Pinal County, and Gila County.

If you go to message number 2 of this thread, you need to the last entry on the line to determine the counties listed above. Some counties have multiple tower locations, so be sure to notate the differences. In that area, there will be some systems with similar frequencies assigned, so it's going to take some detective work. If your bringing Trunker that will be a plus.

I'd be interested in all TG's that you hit on, even if there is no audible activity. One thing I've noticed with this system, using Unitrunker software, these guys like to play with their radios. They tune through the different channel settings. Does Trunker also allow export of Radio ID's. I have a number of them that I've collected over the past year plus. I would like to correlate them if possible too....

Thanks again and happy hunting,

John

Hi Eric,

Very nice input about recognizing the control channels. I look forward to hearing from you when you get out here. Hopefully by then, will have a much bigger database going that will give you something to chase after :)

Thanks,

John

A little more information about the APS system for everyone. It's obviously statewide, but we have mega holes in it. It is NOT only used by the Power people. While most traffic is from these guys, there is other non-power related traffic hidden in there. That's why I'm trying to bring awareness to this very promising system.

I am heading up to Flagstaff this Friday to Sunday. I'm a vendor at the Celtic Festival up there, but I will be bringing my radios and computer to put it to work while driving up there, to hit some systems from the Tucson area and up as I drive by, as well as, take a look at the Flagstaff area.

Thanks for all your help,

How is the project going?

I haven't been mobile and been able to take a look at/store the IDs at the same time.

I will soon have an excellent antenna up to assist in some area research using a directional Yagi.

Well, it is moving slowly, but I have received some inputs from mostly in the Phoenix area. I am compiliing the data and, as soon as I get something tangible, I update the APS trunk website. I can tell you that some have begun using some software and have discovered what I already know....it is not only used by the APS folks.

I just returned from Flagstaff. Not too active up there, but I was able to confirm a couple of things, and will post them, once I do a data dump from my laptop. Might be posted by this weekend, as I have a busy schedule :<

Thanks to everyone who has contributed privately and publicly.

Hello All,

Special thanks to everyone taking the time to listen or help ID the TG's and users on the APS trunking system in Arizona.

To date, 94 different TG's have been "seen". Most are not ID'd. Any help on the TG ID's, even if all you can say is that it is related to the APS folks, helps. As you can see though, not everyone on the system is an "APS" player.

Here's the update of users and TG's as of today, 21 July 06:

On my recent trip to Flagstaff, I heard the following APS Trunk control channels active. Unfortunately, computer was down, so unable to provide the site ID's, but I did write down approximately where I began to hear the control channel, for those who live in the area and can hopefully check it out and ID.

855.9375mhz - I-10, Exit 161
858.4125mhz - I-10, Exit 161
858.4125mhz - I-17, Exit 252
860.3125mhz - I-17, Exit 253

Thanks,

I recently heard TG 1008 surveillance traffic late one weekend evening. Locations given were Phoenix - I was hearng them on Mingus.

Also it appears that Prescott traffic on Mt Francis and Mingus are simulcast most of the time.
