How do I listen to the highway police in northeast Arkansas?

Looks like you will need a scanner capable of P25 Phase II, and you'll have to monitor the applicable talkgroups from the following trunked system:

Arkansas Wireless Information Network (AWIN)

Although the State Police talkgroups appears to currently be FDMA (P25 Phase I), there are some Phase II talkgroups on the system and you wouldn't want to buy a scanner to monitor this system if the scanner only handled FDMA voice (P25 Phase I). Look for a P25 Phase II capable scanner.

He said Highway Police which is not the State Police. But AHP are also on AWIN so the rest is accurate. Just clarifying as some get confused about that. Two completely different agencies.

@ktedder - the AHP has a section in the db with the talkgroups listed. It’s Arkansas DOT - Arkansas Highway Police, listed after the various ASP troops.

As he said, only buy a Phase II scanner now as AWIN is undergoing upgrades to Phase II as we speak.

That's what I get for replying in a forum for a state I have no familiarity with. Thanks for correcting things!

You will also want to have the VHF freqs for the local County Sheriff's Offices as they also talk directly to them on the VHF where/if the SO's do not use AWIN.

It's a common point of confusion for Arkansas, don't worry.

ASP - non-commercial, regular highway vehicles/traffic; under Arkansas Dept of Public Safety
AHP - commercial vehicles/traffic; under Arkansas Department of Transportation

Of course, being fully commissions LEOs for the state, they can also make traffic stops, etc., on the others (AHP stop a regular car or ASP stop an 18-wheeler, for example).

They both will sometimes respond to non-traffic/vehicle related calls, too, to assist local officers.

So, it's an easy point of confusion. It gets really confusing when someone asks "how do I listen to the highway patrol in Arkansas?" and then an explanation has to ensue to determine which they mean.
