Well it seems I was misinformed... According to the current plans, Asheville is going to a new Mixed Mode Analog/Digital Smartzone 4.1 Motorola upgrade. AFR is getting final approval tomorrow night at the City Council meeting for New radios.

That seems to be a pretty "antiquated" platform for a new system.....

So they go to this mixed mode 4.1 system now and 3 or 4 years down the road, official Motorola support and parts will start dwindling and they'll have to upgrade again!

It seems they should spend a little more now and have a longer life system (P25 7.X version) in the long run.....

But that's just me..... ;)

Asheville is probably going to be using VIPER.

The city partnered with NCSHP for federal money for new VIPER towers.

In return they get some limited TG usage on the state system.

Hence the need for the 4.1 mixed mode radios.

Nothing can be found indicating the city is planning a new VIPER subsystem, but that still could be a possiblity.

Homeland Security money is also providing 800 MHz interopt radios for surrounding VHF agencies.

Did finally find a press release from a couple years back indicating that Asheville is indeed going digital.

Well isn't that just great. I just bought a BCT 15 to listen to Asheville's system and they are aready going over to digital. Oh well, can't win them all and at least Charlotte is still analog if I'm ever down there. Any word of a timeline for putting it in use that you know of?

Ashveville is modifying existing licenses and frequency assignments.

5 new frequencies were applied for but there is a snag.

Rebanding in nearby Wave 1 has frozen the new requests. Asheville did manage to receive an emergency temporary authorization.

So, it sounds like they are seriously engaged in the project at present. No official timeline found anywhere other than a reference to this summer in a freeze waiver request filed with the FCC.

Most of the information is found in City Council meeting reports and is unfortunately always in general, non-technical terms.

It right now is showing as part of 2E11, though once they completely switch over to the 4.1 ASTRO, they may switch to a new ID.... Right now only a few of the AFR units have new radios to test on the system, with purchase order for 30 new mobiles in the next few months. APD will follow soon after.

Radios seen

I have a few friends who are with APD and they are carrying XTS-5000 radios. One senoir member told me they would probably be doing the VIPER thing. Many Buncombe SHP troopers have XTS series radio.....using APD's tower.

Here is the big question....will my Pro-96 do the trick for the 4.1 system????

My pro96 handles the Wake County system everyday just fine and the Wake County system is a 4.1 system...I would say yes :D
