Before I program a frequency for a trunked system (i.e. Danbury fire dept ,CT), how would I know which "control channel" to program, since there are many sites, all over the state?

You didn't mention what type of scanner you're using - but you need a P25 phase 2 capable scanner.
You will want to find the (usually) the closest site to you that carries Danbury traffic. I'd guess that would be Troop G or I or A.
You want to program the red frequencies, which are all control channel capable. Than the scanner will pick up the right control channel. You'll need to add the talk groups for Danbury FD.
These are all simulcast sites, and I don't know which scanner you're using, but usually the SDS100/200 do the best with simulcast. Other scanners could exhibit distortion and missed transmissions.

Does this scanner travel all over the State?
If the answer is no, then only program sites that you can receive from your location.
The reason for this is the scanner will waste time looking for signals it will never hear, and you will mise radio traffic.

I would look on a map to see which simulcast site covers the geographical area I'm trying to monitor, and start with that one.
No recent experience from monitoring that area, but I am fairly certain Danbury is only patched to the trunked system with 2 channels from their conventional system. You would not need to monitor CLMRN to hear them if you are local to the city

If you want to hear Danbury FD on CLRMN you should program the Troop A simulcast. The DFD TG *might* associate with adjacent simulcast cells but that depends on a lot of factors.

That's what happens when people who aren't even remotely close to the area try to "help", as what happens far too often on these forums. Especially the forums like this one which are full of local, active users. Just let the locals answer, IMO.
So what you are saying is Post #3 is a useless answer.
I would say it was accurate. The original post was asking about picking frequencies to use for a trunked system and gave Danbury as an example, not saying he only wanted to monitor them.
