Newbie dusting of an old scanner, need help with programming. Anyone help?It is a Radio Shack Trunk Tracker 800 mhz Pro-2050.

Hey JJ, welcome to the site. Most everyone up there are on the Austin / Travis County / etc. etc. system which is digital: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=2

Unfortunately your 2050 won't track this system. You'll need one of the digital scanners listed here: http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Category:Digital_Scanners Personally I like the Uniden models but others here probably prefer the newer GRE models or the older Radio Shack models.

I'm sure there are still plenty of things you can monitor with your 2050 that others here can point out. Who specifically are you trying to monitor?

Thanks for the info, that explains why no matter how many times I tried to program the thing, I couldn't hear anything.
If anyone can tell me what I can receive, I would appreciate it.

The RR Wiki indicates you can (for now) receive `conventional` and Motorola TRS systems.

Navigate over to the Travis County page in the RR Database:

You could program in All Points for Metro Care Ambulance
The other TRS (Trunked Radio Systems) are either not supported for your scanner
or do not have any Publci Safety Agencies.

Any of the conventional frequencies listed below that are `AM`, `FM` and NOT `APOC-25` you should be able to receive.

You could also look at the Federal Page and program the `FM` frequencies.

You can also look at the city of Austin's page: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=4311

Depending where you are, as a rule of thumb you can expect to receive TRS from about 10-15 miles, but conventional systems and their repeaters can extend to 25-45 miles.

Look at the map and the individual cities and experiment.

You can also use (if the scanner has it) a `search` of frequency ranges and see what you pick up.
