The B-1 is supposed to be in the Jones Beach airshow this weekend. Does anyone know where it is being kept before and after the show? I looked around at Republic but only saw the Thunderbirds. thanks

It's just as easy (easier) to fly it out of Whiteman, do an in-flight re-fuel and turn for home after a pass. As it is a total sky show without any static ground displays that would be my guess.

I agree with Spec. The B-1 is currently operational equipment with classified technology aboard. If it were to be placed on the ground, it would have to be guarded by soldiers with automatic weapons. That's too complicated and risky for a fly-by airshow, so they're probably keeping it at home.

True but what about the f 18 hornets that are left outside without gaurds??
The Blue Angels and Thunders birds can be war ready in only a few hours..

I guess they take the good stuff out for the airshows..

I hear there at JFK ..Just waiting for a friend who works there to confirm before I take the ride..

The flight demo team aircraft are not left where the general public can walk up to them.

I went to the Andrews airshow last weekend and they had a static display of the B-1 and there were no armed guards around that aircraft whatsoever. In fact, you could walk up and touch the plane. I took pictures beacuse it's not that often that you can get that close to a B-1!

Static Displays are meant to be just that...a display. In most cases the the general public does not have access to the inner workings of the aircraft and sensitive equipment is either removed or not able to be seen. The OP requested where the bird would be in the area. In many cases aircraft of this type need a ground crew qualified on that specific aircraft to service it. Sometimes there is a specific fuel need also. With the speed and the range of the B-1 the a/c can take off from its home base and do a few passes and return home without need for a ground support TDY deployment. When a/c are on gnd static they are in a different status than a war bird. You are lucky to have had the chance to view that a/c up close. I have been to airshows where certain a/c are guarded by armed military personnel. What is truly amazing here is the lack of posted frequencies used during the airshow. Most airshows where military aircraft appear have numerous frequencies in use not only in the vhf range but the uhf range. The T-Birds use numerous frequencies.

If you take a look in the Maryland forum under "Andrews AFB Open House" you'll find numerous frequencies used at the show, including those used by the TBirds. It'll make a good reference if you're going to another airshow where the TBirds are performing since they'll probably use most of the same frequencies.

According to a message I read on a yahoo group, the B-1 (c/s BONE 01), reported taking off from JFK at 1413z destined for Ellsworth AFB, so it looks like after the flyover they landed at JFK.

Yeah, Allan Stern sent that post for the record. And guys please don't confuse the B-1B with the B-2A. I heard Whiteman AFB was mentioned. That's a B-2 base. The B-1's are based at either Ellsworth or Dyess AFB. Also i'm sure the whole city of New York knew it when the big bad BONE departed as it's a thunderous, ear popping loud as heck noise when that puppy lights all 4 afterburners to get off the ground. Which is standard proceedure by the way no matter how long the runway. I'm sure you guys knew that already but thought i would throw it in. I wish i could have seen it or even heard comms. Don't get many Bone comms down here.

Yeah, that was Allen's post the I referenced, I just didn't want to say it because I wasn't sure I'm allowed to cross post like that. I know there's one yahoo group I'm in where I can't.

I heard that. One thing i forgot to mention is regard to the B-1. Security isn't all that tight for this aircraft. Had one into Nashville a couple of years ago for a bomber squadron reunion and while the aircraft was not on display it spent the night on the cargo ramp on the west side of the field with little to no security standing by, just the occasional drive by by the airport PD. Matter of fact when the airport authority sent the memo out on its arrival security was mentioned and the response from the unit: Security not required.

Now the B-2A at Whiteman, yes that's another story.

Corn, I stand corrected on the base. I really did know better. I was thinking one thing and dropped the other one. All the years on MilCom I shouldn't have made that total blunder.

I was at the Jones Beach Airshow where the B1 did a fly by. It made a total of three passes and I was only able to get off three pictures -one from each pass. It would have been nice for him to have slowed down a bit like most of the others do for picture passes.
