• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I received a shipment of these radios recently directly from Baofeng. This is likely the same radio as the DM1701/DM1702 but without the keypad. They came with spare batteries (requested specifically), chargers, and programming cables. While I don't have a DM1701 on hand they seem to be a solid feeling radio. The biggest draw for these is that they are supposed to be easier to program because the cable chipset is in the radio and not the cable. Unfortunately that is pretty much where the testing because when we plug cable into the radio and then into a USB port, it shows up as a printer port. I believe it should be the same ST Microelectronics port and driver that the DM1701 uses but so far no luck. ST even has a special tool to discover their devices and install drivers but it does not detect an ST device.

I know the devices discovered as they show up when you turn the radio on (or plug it in when turned on) and disappear when turned off. This behavior is the same for Windows 10, Windows 7, and Windows XP. Forcing a manual install of the ST driver succeeds but then the driver install reports no compatible device found.

I just got these yesterday so I have sent off a query to tech support from Baofeng but to not expect to hear from them until after the weekend.

A few things to note, the firmware appears to be the exact same as for one with a keypad because there are options to program the radio from the keypad but no actual way to do that (no key combination to change numbers/alpha characters.) It came with a driver disk (for the ST USB driver) and the 1701 and 1801 software but no luck using those when the device driver is not loading.

Baofeng responded today just now and provided me a copy of the correct software, which is specific to the DM-1703 model. Unfortunately it is the Chinese version so I have asked for an English version. It does however read and write just fine to and from the radio.

Ok so they already replied again and the Chinese software package has an English button. It is using the DM-1702 firmware for the DM-1703.

Will do a short test and then they go off to the lab.
