• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I was just curious if anyone found the roger beep feature on the 5r as hilarious as I do. I know that we would never use a roger beep on a 2 meter repeater. Actually pretty much never. (with the exception of 10 meter FM however I have never actually heard anyone using one there) Anyways this is the only 2 meter radio I have come across that has a roger beep feature. I am curious if anyone has used it on a repeater or perhaps heard one being used on a repeater. Either by mistake or on purpose. I just find it really funny for some reason. Kind of reminds me of the CB days I guess is why. Anyways I think it would make someone sound like a total LID on the air. But hey I just want to know if anyone has heard someone using it or if you have yourself. Thanks HI HI

Yep. I have heard at least one of them around here that don't have sense enough to turn it off. One keeps trying to send DTMF tones on the local IRLP repeater without ever IDing.

To me it's like having ANI that says "Clueless Lid", "Baofeng Biotch" or "Wouxun Whacker" but with only two short tones instead of the long string of digital data it would take to send all that.

There.

Not hilarious as much as annoying. I think it's actually there as an aide for when operating in e.g. a noisy factory or jobsite, where one can't keep one eye on their work and the other on the radio's indicator light without creating a safety hazard. It serves its purpose, I suppose, when used in its intended environment.

Ok thanks for the replies guys. I personally just find it funny if someone was using that on a repeater. I just don't know of any other amateur HT's that have that function. So firstly it would be a dead give away what radio the guy is using. Anyways. We actually have had a few unlicensed operators with these radios in our area. They have been keying up the local repeaters. This brings into mind the PTT ID and also of course the roger beep. I even heard someone use the alert function on a repeater. I remind everyone to set that alert function to SITE.

Unfortunately, for every lid, there is other cheap Chinese radios that seem to think it beep is necessary for their radios to work. And lid using a beep for these other Chinese radios is too kind of a word for them. And there are numerous threads on these beeps.
