To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I need to find out if this radio is capable of resuming general scanning of channels after having received comms and responding (after the conversation has ended). It just stays on the last channel and will not resume scan mode, this has to be done manually everytime and is extremely maddening. I do understand this is a low end radio, but when you're on a tight budget, this is what you have to work with.
Thanks

Unfortunately I've worked with Baofeng radios for the last three or so years, and have never gotten them to resume scanning automatically. Baofengs can do a lot of things for the price, but that's just not one of the features for whatever reason... Sorry!

Nope. Manual scan resume only. They suck at scanning anyway, only 3 channels per second. A $75 Uniden will scan about 25x faster.

That's set in menu option 18:
CO mode, the scan stops when it detects a signal, and resumes when the signal goes away.
SE mode (which it sounds what you are in) the scan stops when it hears a signal, and stays put when the signal goes away.
TO mode, the scan stops and then after a preset time, starts again even if the signal is still up.

I think CCR answered it. Scanning is one thing, when only used as a scanner. I have it set on CO already. I'm talking about receiving a call on a channel, responding to it (Tx'ing) and once the conversation is over, resuming scan mode once again automatically. I need to monitor multiple channels and respond also and manual scan activation is not convenient. I do know that this is a cheap radio but thought that I would ask.

Thanks

Its not clear to me if you are wanting to only scan pre-programmed channels or VFO scanning too but it sounds like the former.
Assuming it is, you might be best off looking at a DMR handset (obviously one that is dual mode). DMRs generally all support auto scanning functions and this generally extends to analogue channels too.

You can do this for example on all Hyteras and the connect systems CS-580. I don't have the TYT. More expensive I know but some of these handsets can be had for not a lot of money and they seem to have much better front ends than the UV5r

The MD380 & 390 support scanning, they scan at about 20 channels per second, and have a programmable scan resume delay. You can program to scan a list of analog and/or digital channels, stop on an active channel, broadcast on the paused channel if the mic is keyed, and then resume scanning after 5 seconds of no traffic or PTT press. They are not dual-band, but they have a better front end than the Baofengs.
