• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hello,
As an active member in C.A.P., I need to know if this radio is NTIA approved? I dont see why not. I can communicate with repeaters, and on simplex, and also program, and receive federal frequencies.

CAP frequencies do not appear to be within Part 90 frequency allocation.

Which means the radios probably have to be type accepted within a different regulation. NTIA certification is definitely required.

Modified ham gear that is not Part 90 certified (just about everything) is definitely NOT allowed on CAP frequencies.

Your question should be directed to your Squadron Comm Officer who will likely as the Wing for direction, to ensure the radio is actually NTIA compliant

Did you already ask your Squadron's Comm Officer? Did you already look it up on line?

The RR court of appeals is not going to rule in your favor.

CAP is very stringent on meeting NTIA specs, so it's most likely that none of the Baofeng radios are approved for use on those frequencies. For a short time, the Wouxun 6x WAS approved for use, but that approval was withdrawn after further investigation.

A used Motorola or EFJ radio (on the approved list) would be your best bet, but be forewarned... getting those radios programmed could be a problem. Best to discuss this with your squadron communications officer.

And if you are serious about CAP and SAR activities, Bofeng, Wouxan, and alike are NOT the equipment you want to depend on. Drop an EFJ, Kenwood, or Motorola? Dust it off and move on. Drop a Bofeng, it's history. Already saw it happen.

Looks like even ht1000's are on the list. Those are a dime a dozen now. Just make sure it's a cn or dn model. If you want something with a screen and still cheap the mt2000 will work fine. If you're needing something with p25 then a efj 5100 will probably be the cheapest and easiest to find.
