Oregontreehugger is correct.
No firmware updates, it wasn't something this unit was designed to be able to do.
I too wish it could.

I asummed it could be flashed because this site listed the different versions, I suppose this couuld be what the factory shipped though.
this is pulled from http://myweb.accessus.net/~090/bc-780xlt.html#firmver
To find out which firmware version you scanner has - hold down the following key combinations while turning on the 780XLT unit. [2], [4] & [9] will display the firmware version and checksum numbers.
BC780XLT

The initial firmware version is 1.19, checksum 8d 1AH.

Firmware version 1.20 was issued around May 2002 and removes all references to Uniden's SmartScanner frequency download service.

The firmware was updated in July 2002 to version 2.06 - changes?

UBC780XLT

The initial firmware version is 1.01, checksum FCd 0H.

Yes, the BC780-XLT has the ability to update firmware via PC. The one you mention was the one, and only Uniden ever released. Then for some reason they pulled it. It makes you wonder if it opened avenues for "other" updates that were not politically correct. [ie; unblock]

The BC780XLT had a CPU firmware change over the life of it's production and has been discontinued. The 780 is not able to be flashed for firmware update via the DB-9 computer port.
