If i get a BC898T scanner, what all will I need to download the firmware update for it? or will I have to download it? What type of cable will I need and where do I download the update from?

It is likely you won't need it (production units have been getting the current load for about 2 years IIRC).
A standard serial cable (DB9 to DB9). If your PC does not have a serial cable, you will need a USB-to-RS232 converter.

is the BC898t a good conventional scanner?
I have a Uniden 898, its a great scanner, the only problem is the manual is "USELESS"...I had a 895 and still have a 245xlt which have almost the same programming. I use it with a outside antenna with "NO" intermod, great audio,PL/DCS instantly, but has no "TEXT". I have not applied the new "firmware update' because im not good with computers....The problem is sometimes when turned on the scanner starts in the "scan" trunking instead of "search trunking"...also , some have had a problem with the PLs disappearing which i never had....Great sensativity, perfect trunking.....You have to check i think pages 47-48 of the Uniden BCT8 manual for CC trunking only as it was left out of whats called a "manual" but the scanner is excellent....PS: Does NOT do Digital
As an 898 owner I'd recommend you consider units with Alpha Tags if you can afford to.
