I'm trying to figure out why Uniden crippled the backlight settings on the 325 compared to the 125. Ideally, I would like the backlight to stay on with open squelch, but that isn't an option on the 325. The only real options are on for 3-4 seconds after the squelch opens (the manual says 5 seconds, but mine always turns off after 3-4 seconds), or turning the backlight on manually. Why was there such a giant leap backwards in the backlight settings for Uniden's second newest detector?

BCD325P2 Backlight Settings:
10 sec - The backlight stays on for 10 seconds after you press 1547080763254.png
30 sec - The backlight stays on for 30 seconds after you press 1547080771906.png.
Squelch - The backlight turns on when the squelch opens then stays on for 5 seconds.
Keypress - The backlight turns on when any key is pressed then stays on for 10 seconds.
Infinite - The backlight turns on when you press then stays on until you press again.

BC125AT Backlight Settings:
Always Off - Backlight is always off.
Always On – Backlight is always on.
On with Squelch - Backlight is on while squelch is open and until delay expires.
On with Keypress - Backlight is on for 10 seconds after any key is pressed.
Keypress+Squelch – Both above-mentioned "Squelch" and "Keypress."

It seems like these options could be changed/added with a simple firmware update.
Please Uniden? :)

I vaguely recall that GRE and now Whistler has a patent on this. Someone else may know more or correct me at the least.

I remember reading some time ago that this had something to do with a patent.

You'll have to wait for a more authoritative answer. Upman is travelling from the CES show...

If it was a patent issue, why would backlight on squelch be available on the older Uniden BC125AT?

I can tell you right now that I don't know the answer, but I can ask and see if someone does. I'm not sure if I will get a response on this.

Thank you! Seems like it could be accomplished with a small change to the firmware. Here's hoping you get a response!

Why would I need that, its on my belt or on the stand when on the stand I set it for squelch and when im programming it i set it to on infinite with press of button on or off. My fingers are not broke i can easily set how i want it via menu. Plenty of choices for me. I like this bcd325p little guy it works great uses cheap aa batteries not like sds100 and works great, not like the deaf sds100 I returned cause it received about 25% of what my sds200 did with the same setup, not willing to take another chance on the 100.

Add me to the list for more backlight options.

I wonder if it is set up this way because it only uses two batteries.

It has been ask before GRE owns patents and Paul UPMAN stated back in 2013 that the answer was no. What they are doing now does not violate the patent and things were staying as are. Like I said this has been UPMAN's postition as far back as 2013
What about all of the other Uniden scanners that function in this exact same manner?

My request is just that the BCD325P2 and similar scanners have the same backlight settings as the older BC125AT and similar scanners. I don't understand why they changed the backlight behavior in the "newer" scanners, specifically why they added a timeout to the backlight setting when the previous behavior was to keep the backlight on while the squelch was open.

Alert lighting are the GRE patents not backlight operations. People want the same backlight settings that are on the 125at on there 325p2.
