What's the advantage with this kind of setup?

You jack the GPS receiver in and then what?

With a GPS connected, the scanner can automatically enable/disable systems and groups based on location (and based on how you have the scanner set up).

I'm using one of these as well with a splitter to input two 996XT's and it works great.

I know it has been discontinued, but I use this unit

GPS Receiver for Uniden Bearcat BCD996XT/BCT15X/BCD396XT/BC346XT police scanner radios.

It has been a great receiver and has performed flawlessly. It is also small enough to keep all of the components (except for the actual GPS antenna) behind the dash and out of sight. Sensitive receiver and very fast startup even from a cold state. I have the antenna inside on the dash and it has maintained a good GPS lock everywhere I take it.

If the new one coming out is as good as this one, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I want to hook a GPS up to my 996XT but my Garmin nuvi 660 does not have a female 9 pin connector. I want to keep the GPS I have but would like to buy a CHEAP Garmin, with the female connecter, to use only with the scanner. can anyone suggest a cheap Garmin that would work with the XT. I want to stick with the Garmin Brand but it must be CHEAP!
.
thanks for the help.............

More GPSs

Using an old Radio Shack Digitraveler for the HP!. Also there are several Delorme Tripmate GPS units on eBay for less than $20 bids right now. Found somebody on eBay that has the double male 9 pin serial null modem adapters and ordered some, makes connection simple. If you want cheap then you better know how to make cables up, Plug N Play does not equal cheap. Plenty of old Garmin and Magellan units out there up for auction. Try Meridian, Sport Trak, Explorist, GPS 12 etc. Most units around 5 years and older without USB work.

I had forgotten about a Delorme Earthmate GPS units I had stored in my "Junk Drawer". it was quite the thing several years ago. used it with street atlas and a laptop. did a pretty good job. ends in a USB plug for the laptop. dont know if I can convert it or not.

Thanks Mike! At those current prices, I bet a few folks will be doing some experimentation.

With the Delorme Tripmate-What do you mean by saying "with modifications for auto-start?" is there a set of directions or something for this process?
