Is this scanner hard to program . Or can you just enter your zip code.

You can just select your state and you have a lot of basic frequencies plugged in automatically, however, you will want to program it yourself. For conventional channels it can be done from the front panel easily, but for trunking and more detail you want one of the programming apps like “freescan” or “ProScan”. They will connect to Radio Reference to download programming easily.

All of the programming software is Windows based, I run mine thru a virtual machine on my IMac.

It is possible to run free scan on a Mac using Wine, but the serial port is an issue.

I have the ARCXT software for the the 996p2 that i used to have, found it very easy to program when having the RR membership, and just importing the data from the RadioReference database.
