The first mistake made was to reply to them over the air and confirm they can interfere. During training exercises in the military, radios would be taken by the enemy to see how we would respond.

Bosque county is P25 trunked. The radio could be deactivated or taken off the system. Maybe they have a VHF conventional HH that is used on simulcast to dispatch?

Hopefully some local concerned Hams will try and do a fox hunt on these idiots. They will eventually be caught. I image they have no idea they are soon to be felons due to interfering on purpose with the duties of public safety.

I’m not in the area but they appear to still be VHF P25/analog although they are almost surrounded by counties with established or building P25 trunk systems.

Ok I thought I saw Bosque county P25, but hopefully local Hans will have fun with a Fox hunt. I would jump on that in a minute. Would be a fun challenge.

In cases like this, not even encryption will prevent this.
Yes, but an encrypted radio would likely be on a trunked system in which it could be unsubscribed from that system. Probably wouldn't be a single frequency P25.

Exactly.
However, what I've run into on my system, is no one keeps track of the ID's for radios issued to individuals. All they know is "Bob's radio done got ripped off". As a system admin, you ask them "Which radio did Bob have". Reply "A black one with an antenna on top".

If someone is paying attention, they can get the radio ID and remove it from the system.

In cases like this, not even encryption will prevent this.

Over The Air Rekeying. System admin would roll the keys on all the radios except the one that was lost (see above…). Then Beavis and/or Butthead could key up all they want, but no one will hear them and they won't be able to hear anyone else.

Why roll the keys versus stunning the radio? If you have any unencrypted TG's on your system they could still cause interference

Two options. Either one will work.

Ideally, as I was suggesting above, you kill the radio and then B&B can't do anything.

Start holding people that are issued radios, police credentials, guns, etc accountable for leaving these items in an unattended vehicle.

Transmit inhibit is what my organization does......we have actually had the perps bring radios in to be "fixed" as a result on a few occasions.....often to local radio shops that recognize the radio and report it back to us. Then the fun really begins, how did you get this radio, what were you using it for (all of it has been recorded on an Eventide or Stancil logging recorder), etc.

Encryption doesn't mean trunking. See Miliam county and Coryell county for example. Conventional VHF with encryption (40 bit RC4).

Of course not, and didn't mean it wouldn't be; however, I have yet to see encrypted P25 single channel that wasn't federal. Of course non-trunked exists, but is usually trunked.
