Is there a better antenna for this scanner?

More info is needed. For portable hand-held, home/base, indoor/outdoor use? What will the scanner be used for? 700-800MHz Public Service, Aircraft, Railroad, Marine, Amateur Radio, FRS/GMRS etc? There is really no one-does-all that will work as well as an antenna designed for the band/frequencies you're wanting to monitor.

As iMonitor says, more information is needed to make a proper recommendation. While there are a number of very good antennas at that linked page, none of them are all that great for 700/800 MHz. It really does depend on what band(s) the OP is interested in, and we don’t have an answer to that question yet.

If your sole target was San Angelo's P25 system, the best antenna would be one of the Remtronixs 800MHz antennas.

But your County, Tom Green, and the VFDs in the county, are Vhf-high, which is not the best target for the 800MHz antenna. Your neighboring counties are also using Vhf-high. While the Remtronix antenna is not totally deaf on Vhf, you'd need a stronger signal to hear the county and your neighbors. I've had good results with the Diamond RH789. It's available with a BNC connector (you'd use the SMA->BNC adapter that came with your 436HO), or with an SMA connector (no adapter needed), the SRH789. That is a telescoping antenna, and it has markings on the antenna for how far to extend to optimize a specific band. I use this antenna on my SDS200, with one section extended, and get good coverage in my area. There are number of 700/800MHz trunked systems in the DFW Metro area. However, Dallas PD & FD use Uhf. Dallas County, a number of the smaller suburbs, as well as cities in neighboring counties, use Vhf-high. No antenna will be the absolute best in every band, but the 789 works for me as a good compromise solution.

A decent ‘all-around’ antenna for the 436 is the Comet-703. It’s a Ham tri-bander, about 6 inches tall and very flexible. It’s decent enough on 700/800, pretty good on UHF and just OK on VHF-Hi. Any multi-band duck antenna is going to be a compromise though, and this one is no exception. But for me its small size and flexibility make it my go-to antenna for the 436 more often than not.

I know that the remtronix 820s with the o ring works for the Bcd 396xt, Bcd 996xt, bcd 436 hp and the sds 100. Also works with the Whistler trx 1. I know I guy that had this antenna and was connected to site tower near York county. That's near the SC, NC state line. And he was in Georgia. Listening to traffic around spartanburg. That's incredible because my Bcd 396xt don't pick up spartanburg site when I'm in anderson. I'm currently having the remtronix 820s antenna being shipped to me. Ima see what gain it can get on the 800mhz system. I'm currently using a 13" waston antenna which suck on the 800mhz P25 system
