Anyone have a preference for selection of a speaker for mobile use w/ scanning? I currently have the standard RS model....works OK, but am looking for something w/ even better sound quality....particularly for listening to digital 800.

Thanks much.

I have always liked the '80 and '90 Motorola Mitrek/Micor/Syntor speaker

Thanks for the responses. Which vendors might I get these speakers from?

Thanks again.

Look at the surpluss commercial radio vendors, or better yet at Ham Swapmeets.

doctordave, you didn't say what scanner you were using, so this may or may not apply. Hooking an external speaker to the earphone jack of most scanners will get you less than you hope for. The earphone jack usually has the audio output attenuated so that you don't blow your eardrums out. You can check out various "mods" for various scanners to overcome this on StrongSignals and other sites. :)

WOW!

I was about to say after 121 post you dont know about MOTOROLA GEAR???

Go to EBAY and look at motorola speakers. You don't really need to Amplified speakers unless you really want to rewire them. Either the Black or the White Motorola speakers will be fine for your application. I use 2 of them in my truck, I acually have a TM-D700A and I have one hooked up to the VHF side and 1 hooked up to the UHF side!

Go with the Motorola speakers you wont be disappointed(not to mention they are relativly CHEAP)

Hope that helps ya

Sounds like you are talking about something other than a scanner, which would be off topic. 8)

Ok, because I know that your going to do it anyways and you control what is said here....tell me how that is off topic????? so I mentioned another radio, but the question was in reference to SPEAKERS and I recommended Motorola speakers.....

Thanks for the replies. I previously had free access to law enforcement-issue Motorola speakers and was tremendously impressed w/ the quality. Mine are 10+ years old now and sounding a little crackly. Will check some surplus equip vendors, since it seems ( from replies) Motorola is still about the best game in town for speakers. Anyone know of an online surplus dealer that it quite reputable? I don't have any experience w/ such vendors.

Thanks very much.

Okay one thing at at time.

1. I don't control anything.

2. Off Topic:

You will note that the question deals with a speaker for scanning. Your post deals with a Kenwood dual band ham radio, not a scanner (although it does scan), hence off topic. BTW, your TM-D700A has external speaker jacks; have you ever plugged one of those Moto speakers into an earphone jack on a scanner? I have, you would be surprised at how poorly it works.

3. You can ask "please" all you want, but when you wander off topic, don't take offense when your failure to read and understand a thread results on your being "called" for going off topic.

If you plug a non amplified motorola speaker into a "scanner" that needs amplification then it will sound like crap....ie.....the "PRO-96" needs amplified speakers if you plug one in. Most other "scanners" dont need amplications there fore the motorola speakers will work fine.

Yes I mentioned a TM-D700A there is nothing in this thread mentioning only for scanners. Yes I have TWO MOTOROLA SPEAKERS HOOKED UP TO MY TM-D700A and they work very very well.

I was just using my TM-D700A as an example for the motorola speakers

NOW THAT I HAVE ALL THE MENTIONING ABOUT SCANNERS OUT OF THE WAY TO PLEASE LOUMAGG......

Doctordave.....if you just do a search on EBAY and go to the Motorola section you can buy all of the motorola speakers that you want. They are cheap and work very very well!

It appears that "erchambers" has a problem with me. Okay, but just to keep everything in the open here is a PM he sent me:

Well, I dont know who you think you are, but I thing that your post was the post that was off topic......you had no right saying what you said and I dont appriciate it. I have never done you wrong and I cannot believe that you would say something like that.

I was not off topic. I simply mentioned that I had Two Motorola speakers hooked up to my radio(so it was not a scanner) there is no rule here that every post has to be about scanners.

And if you would pay attention here you would know that I am deep into scanning and have multiple scanners, so it is odvious that I am a scanner hobbiest.

The post was reference speakers that is what my post was about...so it mentioned another radio oh god forbid.

You are not a moderator here....so stop acting like it, and if you keep posting post like that I am going to start sending them and reporting them to lindsay.

I think you post was a in appropriate.

As for reporting me to Lindsay, if you feel I have been inapproprate, then go right ahead, it is your right to do so. However, don't send threats to me via PM, as you can plainly see, I have no hesitation in letting others see what is said about or to me.

When I lived in Orlando my favorite place to shop was Skycraft Surplus. They started out with airplane parts, but now cover everything, including a lot of electronics. I bought a couple of Motorola speakers that were new in the box from them in the past, less than ten dollars. One good thing that one of them a had note in the box that the speaker must be grounded. What a difference it made when I did run a ground. Try them, here is there website

Amplified speaker.

There is a GE -Ericsson speaker that was also amplified and has a on/off switch along with a volume switch. Its even better than the Motorolas... I'll have to dig th part number up. Comes on a swivel mount base and is readily found still new in the box for around $20.

So replace the actual speaker in the housing with a new one.

THat would probably cost more then just getting an "new" surplus one.

I use a comuter speaker that can handle 9-12vdc input.
Great amplification. I have no problems hearing the radio with the windows down. You won't find anything louder. And they're not expensive.
I keep mine under the front seat.
