• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I created a Python script that utilizes Amazon's Polly TTS engine to generate TTS mp3 files then automatically sample them down and convert them to the WAV format that the CPS needs.

There is some setup required (installing the required modules and signing up for Amazon Polly + installing the credentials) but I feel like it has to most natural-sounding voice announcements versus any other method. Example here: Vocaroo | Online voice recorder

If you'd like I can upload the Python script to Github or similar.

Having tried voice announcement, and not using it anymore, take my advice: Use it sparingly. Keep your voice files as short and simple as possible. "One" is tolerable, "Channel one" gets very annoying very quickly. You'll have to hear that file EVERY TIME you switch to that channel. It WILL get repetitive. It's a cool feature...for 30 seconds. After that it's an irritant.

If you're actually forced to change channels when not looking at the radio, the VA feature is practical. Otherwise I'd just skip it.

I oversee a county with 2800+ APX's and every radio has VX Announce. Depending upon user, there are upwards of 400 vx files in radio. If the user doesn't like VX Announce, they can disable via MUTE Menu item.

Per your comment. Public safety users love it because they can switch channels/talkgroups and have audible confirmation of where the selector landed. (And not have to pull radio out of turnout gear or holster to view display)

For more basic users, it is a full verbal announcement of what is very likely a jumble of letters/acronym displayed on their radio.

YMMV.

That's its purpose, primarily. So you can know what channel you're on when you are in a situation where you won't want to or be able to see the radio's display or knob position. Super useful for firefighters that are fully geared up and have to switch the radio to the fireground 2 channel, for example. It's certainly a very useful feature for such situations and I've never said otherwise.
