Hopefully, someone can help me out here........I am trying to figure out the easiest way to stream my Pro-197 outside of my home network, so that only I or others that I select can listen. I have read lots of posts, and cannot figure out the best way or how to set it up. I have all the cables, and have found some of the software that is available, but I am looking for help, on what is the easiest to use.

Thanks in Advance!

Don't know if it's the best way but it is the free way. I am using Darwin Streaming Server (DSS) - (dss.macosforge.org) along with QuickTime Broadcaster to stream locally and it works really well. Darwin is an open source version of QuickTime Streaming Server and available for the Mac. However, the source code is freely available so it can be compiled on Linux or Windows as well if you choose one of those. If you're not familiar with setting this up it can be a bit tricky but I was able to get it running pretty quickly. This can also be used to stream video as well as audio if you so desire at some point.

An easier way would be to use Nicecast from Rogue Amoeba (Rogue Amoeba | Nicecast: Broadcast Any Audio To The Internet, Right From Mac OS X). There is a trial version available but the full version is $59. Setup is a snap and you can even customize the sound with a very capable sound effects library. It is audio-only as far as I can tell.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info......I am running Windows, so this wont work that well for me.........I have been able to get it setup some software to work on my home network, but I can NOT figure out how to get it to work from outside my home network. I know VERY little about servers and how to set one up, so that is one of the problems.

Here's some basic info to get you started. This info is not Scanner Cast specific. It will help you seek the basic networking knowledge necessary to configure your router and lan to allow incoming traffic and point it to the right computer and port.

This is quoted from the Scanner Cast website

So, that's the easy part. Now, to the more complicated stuff. In general, to be able to access ScannerCast from a random place on the Internet, you will need to:
Ensure the computer running ScannerCast allows incoming connections to ScannerCast on the port you’re using -- In other words, setup your local computer's firewall software properly;
Configure your router/firewall to allow incoming access to the port you’ve configure ScannerCast to use, and to forward requests coming in on that port to the system on which ScannerCast is running.
Determine your external IP address (provided by your internet service provider). One way to determine your external IP address is to go to an external site for this purpose such as What Is My IP Address? Lookup IP, Hide IP, Change IP, Trace IP and more....
From anywhere on the Internet, using your favorite media player (Winamp, iTunes, Windows Media Player, or whatever) connect to http://”IPADDRESS”:”PORT” where “IPADDRESS” is your external IP address and “PORT” is the port you’ve configured ScannerCast to use
None of this except specifying the port number on the Config tab, is ScannerCast specific. It’s the exact same procedure that you’d use to enable a multi-player computer game or any other network service.
I know that's probably not clear enough for most folks who didn't already know how to do this. But due to the wide variety in people's network configurations, modems, routers, firewalls, etc, it's very hard to generalize. Google around, and if it still sounds like a lot of gibberish to you, maybe you can get a computer-savvy friend to help. Remember, they don't have to know anything about ScannerCast, they just need to know a bit about home computer networks, including routers and firewalls.

Mike:

Your question and request for help is a good one. I've been there and done that. IMO, the easiest way to accomplish what you are trying to do is use Proscan software, where all of this is easy to set-up and done for you by the software. "However", seeing as how you don't have a Uniden radio, that won't work for you LOL.

You could use Win500 software right now for a one-to-one private stream. You run the stream using the Win500 server software running on a PC at home and you connect to the stream privately over the internet using the Win500 client software. You still need to configure your home network router to port forward the Win500 connection from the outside and/or configure the port being used as an exception in Windows firewall. Once this done you will have exactly what you want, but only for one listener at a time. If you are technically inclined, the author of Win500 software published a free utility called TCPMux, which can be used to get around the 1 connection limitation when using Win500. It is however a technical "adventure" IMO. There is a thread here that speaks to this configuration.

http://forums.radioreference.com/sc...win500-tcpmux-configuration-instructions.html

The other alternative (which I often use), is to run Icecast for Windows (freeware) as a server to provide the stream and then broadcast it out using ScannerCast or Radio Feed. The proper configuration of port forwarding on your router is still a requirement. The URL that you use for the stream becomes the private address that you and others use to connect & listen.

All of this can be done and many of us already do. In my experience, there is some trial & error and some basic knowledge of networks/routers/firewalls required along the way......
