Suggestions for best handheld scanner to bring to airshows so I can listen to Blue Angels and Thunderbirds communications?

Also check the website before you go,some shows ban radios of any kind, others will allow them but they will checked by security and you may be stopped anytime during the show as well.

BC125AT For Air Shows

I just bought a BC125AT and I'm very impressed for use on the aircraft bands and railroad band as well. Very impressive! I use a Diamond RH77CA antenna on it and that improved the performance over the stock antenna...

Blue Angels

I was going to take a scanner to the Smoky Mountain Air Show recently. But I found out that scanners at that show were a banned item.I found out that I could stay home and see the Blue Angels from my house.I bought the Radio Shack Pro-651 which covers the entire military aircraft band.I heard the Blue Angels on 284.25 MHz.Check the airshow website to make sure that they allow scanners before taking one there.

This thread is about purchase of scanner to monitor, not the best parking spots. Please stay on topic

Watched Blue Angels at MCAS Cherry Point this afternoon, it was great being able to hear them as well. The following frequencies were monitored:

237.8 BA8 Solos (used by plane number 5 and 6)
305.9 BA9 Bert (Plane went up before show and reported on winds/clouds)
275.35 BA10 Diamonds (planes numbered 1-4)
284.25 BA16 Box
142.6125 PL 67 Ground ops (Primary comms with tower, heard talking about other planes moving
and in the way of BA, also trying to figure out if Bert hit a bird)
139.8125 PL 67 Comms (Heard talking about camera setup and asking for check of BA16)

Unfortunately, could not hear Airboss despite searching military and civilian freqs.

as an fyi most airboss will use the gound Freq at Mil show so they have the tower on there with them

There are also now apco p25 freqs being listed with the thunderbirds. Not sure if they are used but to all that have digital scanners, make sure your audio is set to all and not just analog. I will be near a show today on Long Island and will be looking for p25 as well..
