isn't it a spanner nut? I recall just using a spring clip tool (or any thing that could fit in the opposing recesses and twist gently).

Yea. I think the forum de-res'ed the picture a bit when I uploaded it or b/c I cropped out so much.

a417, do you mean snap-ring pliers. I have a few of those. I did not think to try.
fxfscon. that X-key sounds familiar. I know it was mentioned once on an episode of Scanner guys, but I could not remember which one.

I will try a pair of snap-ring pliers first.

Thanks

:) The right angle ones would be the ones to try. :)

OK. I was able to remove the panel nut an re tighten using a pair of automotive right angle snap-ring pliers. This seems OK for a one-off REPAIR. However, I think the recommendation goes to the x-key sold on Amazon, as recommended in post #2.

:) It is always advisable to use the right tool for the right job (as designed). Of course, in a pinch, we can use what is available within reason & safety. Glad you got it off! :)

I think it's a 9/16" socket - but you may have to grind the end off so that there's no chamfer - good ones ain't cheap, but when you earn your living with them you need good tools......

The x-key tool came today. I was able to convince the nut off with it and make the modifications I needed. However I suppose this tool isn't the exact one. The teeth seem to be a bit wider than the notches it's meant to fit in. Oh well. It got the job done; as about as well as a set of automotive snap ring pliers
